Does your fuel pump have a recirculating line?(Three lines going to pump) They sometimes recirculate using your vent line. This can fill this line with fuel and when you stop it sloshes back up the line and may leak. You may not see it except under the right circumstance. This setup can also result in slow filling of tanks because vent line may have sags that fill with gas an block proper venting. I had this problem until I installed FI then I recognized what was going on.

Jon, This pump does have the 3rd port. It was capped, but I did just run a dedicated return line to the filler neck. This pump was one of the last purchases the PO did before I picked it up. My thoughts were run the line. That way the next pump I pick up no matter if it has two lines or three I am okay to put it in if needed and in a pinch.

Jon,
The mechanical pump with 3 connection is for return line to the tank.
Smell is possibly coming from a leaking fill tube conection.
Have you replaced all the rubber?

This thread got kind of sideways, But, Yes I replaced the filler neck hose as well with fuel compliant hose I sourced locally. Its the correct size, and its tight. No leaks that I can detect from those.
Im thinking the main vent hose has fuel trapped in it possibly from a sag. I will inspect that and run it up higher to see if that corrects the problem. The CFO also informed me that she did not smell the gas when it was happening, so its looking more like something in the filler neck area.
Wont get to that until the weekend to take a better look.

Do you happen to have the part number or description of the old school cap?
Its something to keep in mind if I strike out on the vents.
thank you

Can also be very simple issue at fuel inlet to Qjet. Sometimes when you tighten the fuel line there can be some "wind up" in the line. With heat cycling it springs back becoming slightly loose. It only takes a couple drops of fuel to stink. The hot engine makes it vanish as soon as it leaks so no evidence is ever found. Worn primary throttle shaft bushings can cause this as well. During moderate throttle fuel wash can seep out the shaft seals. But when you look at idle that point is now a vacuum leak and everything looks tidy as fuel has vaporized and no evidence. A drop of lube where the flair nut contacts the fuel line should stop the wind up. Slide back the flair nut a bit, apply and re snug with flair nut wrench. Rebushing the Qjet can save it if worn.

Appreciate it John,
The carb is a fresh Rebuild direct from Dick P. (250 miles on it now) The first 50 miles I had no issues at all with the smell, and I did multiple stops in those 50 miles. After I replaced all the fuel hoses and dropped the tanks is when the condition showed up. I did not touch the fuel line from the pump to the carb with the fuel line changes, Didnt need to.

I had the same problem, turned out to be a cracked vacuum line close
to the carb.

Thanks Ray, I replaced all the vacuum lines with new when I put the rebuilt carb on, just trying to cover all my bases in a logical way.
I wont have time to get to the coach until may be late Sunday or Monday, but Im suspecting that my main vent hose has a sag in it, and may have trapped some fuel.
