While my coach is at the Coop getting repaired from the accident, Jim B. Is removing some of the POs "improvements", cleaning up the wiring (easier said then done!) and installing a Mac Dash. I am trying to choose the finish for the dash panels (cover will be light grey). If anyone has pictures I would greatly appreciate it. Also any recommendations on rear cameras and double din head units. The good news is we are finally working with the insurance adjuster to get the repairs done. I am thinking 78 Corvette Indy Pace car as a basis for the new paint scheme.

If you are going to install a double DIN system, you could easily find one that has GPS internal with maps and a separate input for a back camera. Sorry have no direct models to recommend, but good auto stereo shops should have them or at least a catalog. If you go this route, you want lifetime maps included. Banggood has them on their site, but I would be dubious of the mapping included.
I am not happy with my 7" Magellan RV model. It runs Windows CE and is difficult to use. I do not recommend the Magellan for this reason. Or, the Windows CE operating system.

I am leaning toward the Kenwoods because they use Garmin mapping which I have used for years. I plan on looking at some stores this weekend. I am hoping to get some feedback on units people like and don't like. Thanks for the input! It is hard to evaluate them without actual usage.

Please post back with photos when you are happy, or even not happy. I have some interest in this path.

I've a single DIN i my 26' Mac dash, with a flip-up screen. Came from Clarion. Don't buy theirs, you cannpt get help from them. I've not been able to get a Clatrion person on the phone in five tries, and the machine has no help for map updates on this model. The maps were being updated by some outfit that's now out of business, they sold the software to TomTom, who will not help except on TomTom stuff. Skip Clarion, they also don't answer emails to the listed address - or at least haven't yet in three weeks.

Thanks for the info. I have noticed that a lot of these GPS head units have very expensive map updates. I sucks Clarion won't support their product, an all to common issue with consumer electronics.

J D the business model for consumer electronics is determine the projected failure rate in the warranty period. 3%? Production run of 100,000. Put 3000 on the shelf and when a claim appears send them a new one. Go to the nest model. This works for TV sets, not for something which needs periodic updates. For net connected stuff (blu-ray players, etc.) it's easy - automated update process with the owner being the only human involved. For a GPS in a vehicle not so good.

When I first saw the single din flip up screen option, because of the limited space on my new dash, I figured this was for me. So I went to Best Buy to look at the 'flip up". They didn't have one out on their display so I asked one of their tech's about it. He told me that they had to stop selling them because so many were coming back for repair or replacement. He stated that the engineering on the mechanics of the flip up were not right causing the screen to stick in any number of positions....especially in cold climates. He advised against purchasing the single din flip-up and instead look at the double din. I ended up with a Sony single din radio only. Just what I did.

Being as I have a flip and a non-gps, I'd opt for the seperate GPS if I were starting over.

I just bought a Mazda CX-5 here in Sydney and was astonished to find out that the GPS updates are FREE and come on a SDXC card!

G'day,
I would love to fit a Mac dash, but unfortunately they don't come in right hand drive.
I admit it, I bought a Chinese double din unit to try out, it was cheap, and if I liked the functions I could by a brand name later...8 years later I still have it.
It has a reversing camera,S.D. card with most of my music on it, DVD player, which I use at shows to display our photos of the rebuilding of our GMC (displays on TV and head unit), GPS, which being Windows based gave us a variety of types of upgrades available, and blue tooth to my phone, there are demerit points and fines (should be bigger) for using a phone whilst driving in Australia.
Good sound and radio, only things missing would be Google traffic and a coffee maker.
Hopefully you will have better luck and many enjoyable years with your GMC in the future.

The Clarion has those features Rob, but the inability to update maps is a deal-breaker for the brand in the future. The research I quoted elsewhere noted that 'hands-free' and in-hand cell phones presented pretty much the same distraction to the driver. It was done in the days of analog cell phones, long before voice activated. I suspect the data would be different now.
