Very strange Olds with non clutch fan and some non Qjet in 78? I think the trans is just listed there and may have nothing to do with the engine.

The carb looks like a Carter AFB. Notice the aftermarket intake and absence of EGR provision in the oem location. That's most definitely a GM trans, although I'm not sure which model (could be a TH350/200/200R - not sure without seeing the covered up tail section) but not a Ford - the "C6" means nothing as far as trans ID in this case.

Carb also looks like the Weber being sold with an Edelbrock label in most auto parts stores. Good carb out of the box, but both of mine have suffered from ethanol gas sitting in them for longer than a month between drives. The P.O. had put one on the 455 in the GMC, and it worked, but with the adapter it was too tall and rubbed on the engine hatch. I had a Quad on the shelf so I swapped it in there and put the Weber on the Bronco to replace the one that was corrupted by ethanol fuel.

I mentioned Carter because they were the first to mfr the AFB, which were begat from WCFBs in the early '60s. QuadraJets were manufactured by both Rochester and Carter. Weber and Edelbrock came along later as licensed mfrs of the mentioned carbs, although I'm not sure if Carter was an oem mfr of QJs. I'm wondering because I've seen the Carter name on the side of quite a few QJs in the day.

Fair possibility it came out of a Trans Am, but my recollection was the 6.6L came with Pontiac 400s with the exception of CA, where Olds 403s were installed - might have come out of any number of possible GM passenger chassis of the era. 4A heads supposedly came on '77 -'79 403s. I suspect the clutch fan was likely changed out.

Larry the 403s were in TAs from 79 and up. Some of the 4 speeds still had the 400 Poncho [6.6 T/A on the scoop]. Stock autos had TH350s. I think you are right about Cali models and 403s in 78. AFASIK 77s were all pontiac.
Def not a ford C6. I think it is a THl350, BOP pattern.

I know 403s were in CA Trans Ams (automatics for sure) in '78 as I remember it was the first time I had seen an Olds in a Pontiac at a Long Beach Pontiac dealership when my ship was in dry dock at the former Long Beach Naval Shipyard on Terminal Island prior to our '78/'79 WestPac deployment. It was around '78 ('77 perhaps???) when GM first went to "corporate" engines that a lot of people made a big stink about. TH350's had a 4 bolt tailshaft extension housing, but 200Rs and subsequent 3 speed TH models were one piece casings. I can't tell in the pic, which could have provided clues whether that trans came with that particular motor. The air cleaner certainly isn't from a Trans Am, but it's a mutt motor anyway. All I can tell for sure is that it's a short deck Olds and the heads are '77 through ''79 403s.
FWIW, I used to be a Pontiac nut and owned a '71 455HO 4 speed and a '75 400 automatic Trans Ams which I later highly modified. I dabbled in autocross (I took first place in local SCCA F Stock), bracket/drag racing, among non-off highway nonsensical activities at the time.

There were no gold colored 403s only blue and some corporate black. 330s
were gold and 400s were copper.

Probably an early 70s 350. Almost all 350s from 68-75 were gold (not so sure about the W31s). 403s were never gold, usually blue and were found in several "corporate" applications in 50 states, and even more applications for California. Firebirds got 403s in CA from 77-79, and almost all Trans Ams in '79. Production of the Pontiac 400 ended in 78, and 5000 engines were warehoused for use in '79'4-speed Trans Ams. All automatic '79s were 403s (except for a few 301s) so something on the order of 90,000 79 Trans Ams were built with 403s!
