Folks, a while back there was some discussion about weighing coaches at rally's with portable scales that get the actual weight at each tire.
Does anyone in Arizona have or know of a set that can be borrowed, rented or someplace other than a scrap yard scale that measures the entire weight? I am blowing china bomb tires with my trailer and I really need to get the actual weights.
I am so close to looking for a GMC Bogie setup to put on my trailer, because these lippert axles are total crap. Wheel bearings are about 1 1/4" inches in diameter, make the GMC fronts look like something from a Sherman Tank.

Carl, thanks, I'll look into that.
Harry, I can do that, but it only gets the total vehicle weight. I need point loads on each wheel.

Sometimes you can pull onto the scale with only 1 side on the scale and the other on the ground.

I've a set of scales but I'm a way from you and they are hard to transport. Not something I'd like to carry in the GMC, these things are each 15"x36" and the storage/travel box is heavy. If you're in the neighborhood you're more than welcome to stop by and we'll get it done. The most accurate way is to find a level spot and get a scale under every tire-nice when you have enough scales.

You can get weights for individual wheels at a CAT scale. They have three pads one for the prime mover and two for trailers. You
pull the front wheels on the first trailer pad and the rears on the second trailer pad; that will give you total weight, front axle
weight and rear axle weight. You then back off the scales and pull back on with the driver side wheels JUST off the scales; that
will give you the passenger side weights. Back off the scales again and pull back on with the passenger wheels JUST off the scales;
that will give you the driver side weights.
You'll need to go inside and discuss what you want to do with the scale operator and you will have get a phone number you can talk
to them as you won't be able to use the mike setup for trucks.
You will have to pay for multiple weights but it's not much.

Rob,
I am sure I am missing something; but if you have the total weight, and then (either) driver or passenger side weight, couldn't you easily calculate the opposite side weight via simple subtraction, thereby negating the need to drive over and pay for a third weighing?

Remember I'm the PEDANTIC MECHANIC!
IIRC the total cost for all three weights was less than $20.

Yes and no. RV's are generally not even weight wise. Take a GMC. 400# onan on one side and propane and water on the other. When the water tank is empty, weight is lopsided. I have a similar setup. I added a 200# Honda EV4010 where there once was a little water heater instead. I really want the actuals, because I am considering LT tires in lieu of ST tires.
I'll look into the cat scale, but I have been in touch with a company that will use the wheel scales for $95...

I guess I am missing something here.
Pull on any state highway weigh station scale when they are closed.
On the left side you will see a display with the individual axle weights and the total weight. Write them down. Then pull off the scales and circle around again. Pull on the scales a second time with the right side tires off of the scale. Now you will see the weight of the left wheels only on the same displays. Write them down. Pull off of the scales and subtract the left side numbers from the first numbers. You will have all of the numbers that you want.
You could do the same thing when they are open, just stop and ask first.

Chris,
Aha, a man after my own heart!
For the record I have weighed Double Trouble at two different Cat scales, the key is to talk to the scale operators inside the store
BEFORE you drive onto the scales.

That is the first that I have ever heard of that one. Plenty of non-commercial trucks meet the requirement to be weighed which changes state to state and sometime scale to scale. I just rented a 26" truck from Penske a week ago to help my brother move. It met the requirement to be weighed. The particular scale I went over was posted "all vehicles over 6 ton must weigh".
Many years ago I was stopped by the cops in a Toyota pick up for not stopping at the scales in my favorite state of Illinois. The whole truck could not have exceeded the allowed weight on wheel. I went that way every day on the way home from work. I was told by the cop that I must stop. I did stop once after that and then proceeded to ignore the sign after that.
You can stop. Most states leave the scales turned on 24x7 even when they are not there. I weighed my wife's Jimmy at an Indiana scale on the way home from Bean Station this year. 4860 pounds.

I had no idea you could use a gov't scale when they were closed. These days you would think it's a homeland security no-no.
I went to a CAT scale today. Only 10 bucks. I spent more in gas driving over there.
I was bang on with my assumption that my 4,300# dry trailer is 6,000# loaded. With both axles on the third pad, it came it at 5,980#. plus whatever is on the tongue. (10%? 15%?)
Now we then did a separate axle weigh. Front axle on front pad, rear axle on center pad (Couldn't do it on 2&3 because the center pad is too long.
Front trailer axle 2,640#
Rear trailer axle 3,240#
Is this right or does the tongue come into play here? Together, they add up to 100# lower, so I attribute that to measurement error, but how can two axles with the tire contact patch about 2 ft apart be so different?
I'm still within the load spec of the china bombs (1,870#) per tire, but sadly am a bit over for the 14" LT tires that are available to me. Bummer.
Here is another note, Discount tire inflated my 50#max tire to 58#...
For comparison, my Sport Trac and my trailer weigh 12,220# with my fat ass in it. About the same as the GMC, but running with only a 280 Cu In Engine...
FYI, CAT will not allow single tire weighing. Say it messes up their scales.

Chris,
I'm sorry for what I am about to write.
GMC owners don't let the report below put you off, disregard it COMPLETELY as it is totally irrelevant for a GMC!
You CAN weigh a GMC at a CAT scale using the instructions I supplied.
I re-iterate I did it TWICE at two DIFFERENT CAT scales without ANY problems or complaints from the scale operators!

Just a thought about weighing a coach one side at a time on 'Cat' scales. If you can find a scale that is perfectly level from the scale to the side you'll be parking on, you should get a good accurate reading. If the side where you park is lower or higher than the scale, not so much. I weighed my SOB at a Pilot out of Indio, CA and it wasn't perfect but close to level and I had a 700 lb difference in weight from side to side vs individual wheel weights. Of course I'm dealing with a lot more weight to begin with but the physics still hold true with the GMC. Just don't take the readings as Gospel if you weigh as above.

FYI, CAT will not allow single tire weighing. Say it messes up their scales.
Chri$,
Those that say this are only partly correct.
The scales do not accommodate lateral load well at all. It will not damage (aka mess up) the unit, but it may provide an inaccurate reading. And yes, if a fully loaded highway truck pushes the platform sideways, it can cause harm. This is why the scale has a straight lead in and many have low guide bars. Find one without the guide bars.
