Is there a weight restriction on what you put in the pod / what the roof can handle?
Starting to load up and wonder where I should draw the line?

I have had a large pod on my 26 ft for 29 years it has been full of stuff the whole time fishing rods, chairs, mats , barbecue, tent, portable dump etc. it is a big help for hauling stuff I don't want in the coach.

Thanks. Ideally I wouldn't use it but the cargo space inside is limited and I need to store my shade structure, polls, lawn chairs, bbq, table, etc. I'm guessing it is less than 200lbs...
I won't store anything in there in the offseason...just for the trip...

My feeling is that, as a general rule, we should try to keep as much of the weight we carry as low as possible. Keep your canned goods, drinks, tools, spare starter, etc in a lower cabinet, that sort of thing. It keeps the center of weight down.
I keep lightweight, bulky items in my pod. The heaviest thing up there is a Weber "Smokey Joe" barbecue grille. I also have a couple of empty six gallon water containers that are designated for waste water in case of an emergency. I have worked on ladders all my life, and have no qualms about climbing up on top, but I find the pod to be inconvenient to access any more than I really need to.

You're probably one of those skinny guys that's not afraid of heights...
When your bones get brittle, you'll figure out where to put that stuff and still stay closer to the ground.
I have considered Frank Jenkins concept of a rear bumper box.
Maybe not just under 200 lbs and 3 years short of 80 years. However 40 years of climbing ladders to fix ac units makes getting on the roof of a GMC an easy task. But you are correct it should end at some point down the road.

I've had a couple of folks I knew that fell from the roofs of their RV's. One died, the other just missed killing himself by an inch or so. I worked off ladders for 40 years, am under 200 lbs and not too distressed at heights (at least not at our 'short' GMC heights). And I'm a youngster at 67, walk 2+ miles a day BUT, one of the first things I did after purchasing our rig was to remove the pod. The advantages seemed to far outweigh the potential disadvantages. It only takes ONE misstep and you could ruin the rest of your life. Don't mean to preach but it's just my way of thinking.

I seldom tad up on the roof, just kneeling down and always holding on to
the railing or A/C unit.

I need to replace the pod in my roof as it is disintegrating from years of
Arizona sun exposure.
Has anyone replaced theirs and would recommend a decent replacement that
doesn't cost close to $1k?

My 23' is rear opening and there's a railing aropund the roof. It's safe. The new used 26' however opens to the side and there's no railing. I'm ambivalent - I like the storage space but not the layout. I haven't decided stay or go yet.
