GOOD NEWS FROM JIM K !

CONTRIBUTIONS FOR CMTA EXCEEDED HIS GOAL OF $10,000 AND HE THANKS ALL WHO
SUPPORTED!

AT LAST REPORT BRITT PALMER WAS GOING THRU TECHNICAL INSPECTION WITH HIS
DRAGSTER GMC COACH. BRITT WILL HAVE FOUR ATTEMPTS OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS
TO SET A NEW LAND SPEED RECORD. HE WANTS TO EXCEED 145 MPH.

WEATHER REPORT SHOWS LOW 90'S AND SUNNY!

Were going to the track now.
She is 3rd in line to be inspected.
Britt asked me to go through tech inspection with him.
I will take more pics and ask Thom to pu them up .

As luck would have it, Diana and I were at the Arches RV campground just
outside of Moab, UT when Britt and his 3 college buddies came rolling in.
It was hot and the newly purchased GMC's AC wasn't working and neither was
their generator. The first thing they did was pop a beer then plug into the
electrical outlet to get the AC working. I pulled out my camera and took
this video. These 4 college graduates 9each had started their own business)
do something special every year, and this was the year that Britt wanted to
buy a GMC and go after the LSR. Looks like it's been a long road for him as
his hair is a lot greyer. It's going to be fun to hear how this turns
out...Britt is the one pulling the cord out and he is wearing sunglasses.

Paperwork for the coach was lost by the track, so it had to go through
complete inspection again.
Finally at 6:30we ran, but the engine over revved at 102 mph as it would
not shift up.
Try tomorrow after checking, called Manny T. for quick advise, will use his
suggestions.

I have no idea as to how to do that on an iPad or iPhone!

Some computers/email programs truncate/split after a certain number of characters.

The simple courtesy by the originator of adding the parenthesis marks is of marked benefit to recipients of the split messages. If you want people to read/view what you send, do it.

Gary, I think that the final gearing on the Palmer Coach is at least 2:73
to 1. And if memory serves me correctly, he made the switch to big block
Chevrolet engines. Other than that, ....

I don't know (or generally care) anything about racing, but, given that the 455 Olds is in all kinds of racing boats (that means ridiculous RPMs), what is the advantage to a 454 Chevrolet engine over the Olds 455 when trying to go fast? Build the Olds 455 to race and won't it meet or beat the Chevrolet engine?

While the Olds 455 is a better engine, performance parts are more difficult to come by and more expensive.
There are many more builders that know the BBC than really know the BBO.

Sure you can do 102mph in second gear if your engine can run 6000 rpm. And you are running some taller gears.

I seen he had the entire motorhome on a dyno, so they must know what it can do, and should easily break the record. Just have to get it to replicate what it did on the dyno on the track.

I asked how it went on the salt today. Jim said:
"We made few runs with other drivers today. Britt Palmer went 119.4 mph.
We're having transmission shifting up too soon now. We hope to do better
tomorrow."

I am going to reinforce what Matt said. The Big Block Chevrolet has many
times the amount of speed equipment available for it than the Olds does.
While the Olds can be convinced to make a bunch of horsepower, because of
the 2 bolt main bearings, it is limited to around 6500 rpm because of it.
You rev it more than that, and it will do it, but it will stretch the big
end of the rods out of round, and distort the main bearing webs the same
way. Then it will scatter pieces all over the salt, and that makes the guys
from SCTA cranky. Speed parts for the Olds are near and dear to the
manufacturers hearts (which are located in the same vicinity as their
wallets) They cost at least twice what Big Block Chev parts do. Aluminum
engine blocks are very common for Chevs, but I have never seen one for an
Olds if they do exist at all. Same with billet cranks and after market rods
and pistons. Bonneville is a very remote place, and when you break stuff
there, it is at least an overnight trip to Wendover, Utah to get it fixed.
Just the realities of racing, I guess.
