I used Microfilm, a multilayered aluminum foil and foam product to act as an insulation shield. It is waterproof and does not support combustion. Remove the flame and it goes out. I used an expanded foam product for the headboard (Komatex). It is waterproof and absorbs noise. Easy to work with.
The are other expanded foam products available, look at outdoor sign shops for materials.

Would you tell me in the Cliff note version of what worked for you to insulate your ceiling from heat/cold, as well as sound? We currently have only the original foam in place.... Thanks! Nancy

Westminster, Maryland juice.plus.nancy@gmail.com I haven't done it myself, but I would take one of two approaches:
1. Level the existing foam and then use canned spray foam to glue the thickest layer of polyisocyanurate that will fit in the space on top of it:
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/power-level-valve-fitting/p44335-ceiling-insulation.html
2. Spray new foam directly on top of the old foam and then trim it down so the wall and ceiling panels will fit.
The only other approach that will actually raise the R-value would be to completely remove the old and spray in all new, but that is more trouble than it is worth.
Any insulation other than closed-cell spray or polyisocyanurate sheets will yield less R-value.

You can get aerogell blankets, it's pricey, but very high R value for the
thickness.

sounds hard to believe, care to elaborate Mark?
adding more insulation makes for a lower R value?

Ronald Pottol wrote on Mon, 01 August 2016 12:01You can get aerogell blankets, it's pricey, but very high R value for the thickness. First place I landed on when pricing was $5.72 per square foot, for 10mm thick. Advertised at R-10 per inch, it would take 2.5 of those to get an inch thick, would cost more than $14 per square foot to get the same R-value that you can get for about a dollar per square foot with foam boards.
You can get R-15 in the inch and half you have to work with (if you remove the OEM foam) at a cost of less than $22 per square foot with aerogel. Rough Order of Magnitude estimate would be about $4000 to do the roof.
I wonder why it hasn't caught on?
