I forgot to add. The coach was parked inside the rumble strips. The impact moved the whole coach to the position you see here. The Ford Explorer was traveling 75-80 MPH when it hit the coach.

The Exploder lady is lucky. If she'd swerved a foot further, she would of hit the rear in an offset and at 80 per might well have not survived it. As it is, the side looks a little ruffled and the bumper's somewhat the worse for wear. Bounds can heal it for ya.

Nope, her husband was in the passenger seat drinking beer. The two month old was in the back (Thank God!) in a car seat. I think she got distracted, looked up and saw the traffic stopped and instinctively jerked the wheel right into the side of the GMC. Of course the first thing she said was "I never saw you" The same thing I have heard from every car "driver" that has tried to kill me on my motorcycle. How you can't see a 12,000 lb Motorhome, with flashers on, in broad daylight is beyond me.

She's telling the truth as she remembers it - after all, if she had of 'seen' a great big obstacle, she would of gone around it. Basically a measure of stupidity which led to a total lack of situational awareness. A mix which will hurt you sooner or later.
As to the celphone distraction, some while back - long before smart phones - we were privy to some research on driver distraction. At that time the cellular telephone was the third most distracting thing for drivers. The second was lighting up a smoke. Since the first was fiddling with the car radio, we as broadcasters didn't see fit to publicize the results.
And that's why we abandoned the bikes when we moved to N GA 30-odd years ago. "The other driver was at fault" makes a piss poor epitaph on a tombstone.

Very sad to see but very happy everyone is all right. It definitely
could have been much much worse. Your damage looks very repairable.

When I am out on my bike or scooter, I assume that no one sees me. I slow down or stop for intersections where I have the right of way. Anytime I come to an intersection I assume that the drivers crossing or pulling on to my road did not see me. The worse time is during the day with a woman driving a mini-van awhile talking on a cell phone.

I always felt safest on the freeway at night - the bike is lit up, and they can't come at you from side streets.

Sometimes it is the other way around. Just had an accident here just south of Montreal where 15 bikers drove into the back of an RV that was stopped on a secondary road waiting to turn left into a campground. 1 biker dead 6 in the hospital. During the day around 1:00pm dry roads unlimited visibility on a straight section of road that is flat.

Amen to that, I have seen bikers do some truly stupid stuff. I do think being a good rider makes you a better driver. I drive like I ride, constantly expecting the other vehicles out there to do the unexpected. I used to have a Bright Red Ford Lightning, I was looking this lady on a side street right in the eye and she pulled out in front of me. Just because people look at you doesn't mean they actually perceive you, scary stuff right there. You wonder why there is such a drive for autonomous vehicles.

I tend not to look back and watch for bikers.
Just like my driving, all brakes or accelerator, and all front or back view.

Jim,
Smart bikers don't expect drivers to look back for bikers EXCEPT when they are changing lanes.
Smart bikers stay alive by repeating the mantra; "nobody sees me, nobody hears me, EVERYBODY is going to run me over!"

Good that no one was hurt and the coach looks to be repairable.
That incident confirms to me why it makes sense to get out of vehicle if forced to stop by the side of the expressway. My standard operating procedure has always been to get out of the coach or car if something happens to force a stop on the side of the highway. Of course I try to get as far off the the highway as possible which could be difficult.
We get the cat, is she is aboard in a carrier, and the-plan is for us all to wait a safe distance from the vehicle. My thinking is that it could be death on wheels if a distracted semi or other vehicle hits our stalled vehicle while going 70-80 MPH. I've only had to put that plan into place twice in the 18 years that we have owned our GMC. So far never in our cars. I know some would say that by getting out I am exposing myself to bad people that want to do us harm. I don't know the answer to that other than carrying a weapon and/or avoiding driving in bad neighborhoods in the first place.
