Hanson makes a good set. Sears and others sell it.

Got my set from the Snap-On tool truck. Came with the extractors (easy-outs) for each size bit. Not cheap. Titanium nitride bits, but that tends to make drill bits easier to break.

I've never seen a left handed drill bit. The E-Z Out bits have a left thread to make them bite while removing whatever. I'm with Appie though - what matters it which direction the hole was drilled?

It helps coax it out at you drill instead of jam it in more. Sometimes the act of drilling removes the broken bolt. But not often.

Sometimes you get lucky and the drill will hook the stud and extract it.
Bolts that have broken from over tightening fit this description. Bolts
that have broken from being fun in crooked however do not.

Would it not be easier to drill and tap it?
How much does a left hand drill bit cost?
Or, drill it out and put in a HeliCoil.

George,

Try to get a hold of a machine tool supplier and talk to them because you do not want a Pacific rim supplier. That is what you will probably get at a typical hardware store.

Removing the remainder my chunk and saving the threads is always the best
plan even if it takes longer to accomplish.

I get mine from McMaster. They sell individual LH bits so you can get just the sizes you need. I have poor luck drilling broken bolts unless I use some king of drill guide or drill bushing. I do not know if there is a source for drill guides as I usually make mine on the lathe as needed.

A very sharp center punch rapped in the center of the broken stud helps
keep the drill from sliding off of center.

Yeah, but keeping the drill oriented on the centerline of the hole is a whole nuther matter

Keeping the drill centered... slip a bushing over it or into the hole as the case may be.
