The system was fine except for an O ring leaking. R-12. Everything original. Compressor was good. So I bought a new Sanden compressor, .and drier. Has SP-20 oil in it for R-134. ( everything else in this GMC is new. So why not the A/C compressor. RIGHT. ) I called Sanden. They told me to use only R-134. I want to use R-12, or Duracool. So now what do I do about the oil? I've been told so many ideas. I have over $600 in this compressor. Distorting a new compressor isn't a good financial idea.

The oil in your new compressor is not compatible with R12. It will also react with the mineral oil that is on your system and sludge it up.

Duracool isn't OK with either oil but you can't mix R134 oil with mineral oil.

I would suggest that you pour out the oil from the new compressor and measure the amount. Then flush the oil by filling it with mineral spirits or naphtha and then dumping that and repeat. Then put the same volume of mineral oil into it. If your new drier has oil in it do the same flushing and refilling.

Then use Dyracool in your new system.

The oil in your R-12 based system is not compatible with the oil in the Sanden compressor. The original oil is wax free mineral oil and the one in the Sanden is a PAG oil and the 2 should never meet. You will have on heck of a plugged up system. You can drain out the oil in the Sanden and flush the unit out. Keep a record of how many oz of oil you remove and you will need to add back the same amount of the mineral oil. I use the NAPA wax free mineral oil part# 209500 when I redo systems.

Your other alternative is to replace the dryer ( Use Napa # 208508) which should be a direct replacement after you drain and flush the system and add back the appropriate amount of oil that you removed and install the compressor. More a pain in the butt than just flushing the compressor.

I bought a quart of Mineral oil for air conditioners at NAPA recently and I think they may have discontinued the 208508. The only one they have listed on line and in their counter catalog is

TWD MEI8240.

It should be the same.

Emery,
I have a gallon total in quart bottles of the TEM 209500 in shop and will bring it to the Fall GMCMI rally if anyone wants any. I know that most of the NAPA stores do not have it in stock, but it is available from the NAPA warehouse in their area. My store shows it in stock. The TEM 208508 part# is the A/C Accumulator that I have used in several rebuilds and I also have a local AC shop that can supply unusual stuff. My NAPA store list it as a warehouse part, without talking with them direct I do not know if it is still available.
I could not find the alternative number that you listed TWD MEI8240 in the online catalog.

So what is the big attraction to going Sanden? To my knowledge the Frigidaire A6 was one of the highest capacity units and of a brilliant engineering design. Heavy yes but makes little difference on a big block 11000# vehicle.

Don’t know why you cannot find it. I looked at it just before posting the number.

When one would put “a/c compressor oil” into their sight it used to give the number you posted and the one that I posted. But when I went to a NAPA store they told me that the one had been discontinued. However, when you gave the number I put that into their site and it still shows it.

I don't see replacing an A6 with anything else, as long as you can get an working A6 for a reasonable price. They don't bust very often. Reviewing the offerings from the Heathen Chinee, I see several marked INTL as the brand 'In Denso packaging'. Me and Fridigaire, I guess.

Emery told me that some have had their original compressors not leak with duracool. And I was short on time for Branson. So I didn't put the new compressor on. Put in the duracool. Worked great for a while. Then on the road I had electrical A/C issues. Then when I got back home I took the trail that I've been traveling on with this GMC. I just bought everything that wasn't a wire. Good parts, bad parts, all got trashed. Cold air now flows. Work out the Sanden thing later. Bob Dunahugh 78 Royale

Subject: Putting a Sanden A/C compressor on. What about the oil?

The system was fine except for an O ring leaking. R-12. Everything original. Compressor was good. So I bought a new Sanden compressor, .and drier. Has SP-20 oil in it for R-134. ( everything else in this GMC is new. So why not the A/C compressor. RIGHT. ) I called Sanden. They told me to use only R-134. I want to use R-12, or Duracool. So now what do I do about the oil? I've been told so many ideas. I have over $600 in this compressor. Distorting a new compressor isn't a good financial idea.
