Tried it - thought it was ridiculous - then realized I had 'Bicycle' highlighted. Driving it does a lot better.

Kelly,

Not old news here.
I did not know about that site.
It is bookmarked now.
There is a lot about it to like.
If one is having altitude issues, you can select "Bicycle" ans knock off a lot of high stuff and grade for only a few miles more.

Thank You Kelly

Thanks for the link to this site. Another handy tool for looking at hills, etc. is Google Earth. You can use it to get "directions" between two points and then put your mouse on the route, right click, and select "show elevation profile". The profile of the entire route appears at the bottom of the screen where you can use your mouse to select a portion of the route - like a steep hill - and it will show you on the map where that hill is and will give details about slope, distance, etc. Very handy for deciding where to disconnect your towd and begin driving it up the hill.

We got through it just fine. This is a much better route without all the very steep hills. I didn't come by it through the web
site though. Randy VanWinkle was the source.

Thanks anyhow . :-)

The GMC will handle 18% grades with no problem. We encountered grades that
steep when we did the cross Canada rolling rally in 2012. We also climbed
up the back way into Oatman when we did the route 66 rally. We climb steep
stuff like Hurricane Ridge on the Olympic peninsula in Washington State
without any special preparation other than point it down the road. I have a
bit of difficulty comprehending reluctance at climbing grades with these
coaches, or picking circuitous routes to avoid them. They were made for
these roads. I guess it is all in ones perspective. Enjoy these times. We
may not pass this way again.

We just returned from Amicalola Falls State Park in N. GA. I'd heard that
the approach road was steep, but I was really surprised that the GMC/Cad
could only hold 20 mph in 1st gear going up there! I later checked the
grade with the inclinometer in my 'phone: 13* to 16*, or 23% to 28%!
Lots worse than folks expect to find in the eastern US. I've heard that
the steep one right in Branson is 28% -- anyone know for sure?

With the temperature in the high 90's, I was sure glad to have the AL
radiator -- temp stayed normal for the several miles of steep grades.

Just an aside -- when I first saw this topic I thought it said FATTESTROUTE - I envisioned directions past all the donut shops on the trip.
Anyway - my excuse is the small screen in the iPhone.

Ken -
Take a run (in your toad) up to the top of Brasstown Bald. I wouldn't try it in a 26' anyhow, too crooked - but I question whether a 23' even with good gearing and a stout engine would get up it without overheating engine and trans. We pulled into the parking lot some years ago in one of the minivans just as the bypass hose on the water pump blew. Fun trip that.

Randy VanWinkle's suggested route was fabulous. Thank you Randy. Wish we had known of it going into Branson.
