What sealant is used on the roof seams? Can it be purchased at Home Depot, Lowes, etc? I have a leak in the rear both when it rains and when the AC is running with condensation. The existing sealant is brittle, cracked and I think the water is getting in there.
I know this info is in the forum but I can’t seem to locate it. Thanks for the info.

I have read good things about Captain Tolley's creaping crack sealer. Amazon carries it.
Also dicor self leveling lap sealant. I have not used the captain tolleys. I did use the lap sealant and butyl tape, when I put in my fantastic fan. It did the job well and does a good job at leveling so there are no real high spots.
Im sure others have different recommendations. I have also read to stay away from Silicone. I can attest, it does not work that great, picks up mold and dirt, and is a bear to remove. A PO used that on my coach in a few spots. Mineral spirits does work well at loosening it up.

I once had a leak in the sidewall between the large driver's side window and the window to the left of the driver. I assumed it was from the driver's side window and I sealed that well but the leak was still there. I finally removed the frontmost ceiling panel and the plastic over the driver's compartment and ran a hose over the whole roof. I found that it was leaking into a very fine crack in the seam separating the center from the front room section.
The water would run down the hidden part of the extrusions that were joined together and then drip out just about at the top level of the windows. It ruined the sidewall fiberboard covering so I had to replace that. The hairline crack was so small that I couldn't really see it. I cleaned the seam well and then ran masking tape down both sides of the seam and, ran a small bead of polyurethane sealant along the whole seam. I smoothed that down with my finger and then pulled the masking tape before it cured so that the tape wouldn't get stuck to it. I waited about a month and then painted over the polyurethane sealant.
For the roof lights, I have never had a leak there but some do. I replaced them with LED lights a few years ago and I sealed under them with some polyurethane sealant. I would suggest that you never use silicone sealant on the exterior of your GMC. First of all it doesn't hold paint. Secondly, the sunlight will break silicone down over long term and it will crack and leak.
The front windshield gasket will sometimes leak. You could run a bead of black polyurethane sealant over the top of the rubber windshield gasket.
I have used Sikaflex a polyurethane sealant widely used for boats but I have found that PL Polyurethane (now known as Loctite PL) in a caulking tube which you can buy at Home Depot works very well. It is less expensive than Sikaflex but holds up just as well. They have a few different colors. They also have tubes marked for Siding and Windows, or for Masonry or Foundations. It is really all the same so just go by color and don't worry about what the tube says the application is.
I also used this to seal the floor in the back wheel wells. If you have a crack there between the plywood floor panel and the plastic wheel well liners the tires will throw a lot of water up onto the floor boards. Anyone that has experienced a wet carpet outside of the bathroom area will usually find that this is due to a crack in the area of the wheel wells just above the floor.
For the roof air conditioner and for the roof vents I have found that the best sealant is butyl tape. This is a black rubber stretchy tape that you can buy at glass shops or window and door companies. It stays pliable and the tape that I put in years ago is still soft and I've never had a leak since using it. The tape comes in various widths and thicknesses. I use 3/4" wide and 1/8" thick.

Some report taping the seam, after sealing it, with EternaBond tape. I used it to seal my ceiling vent fan. I believe that it will never leak. I also believe that it will be a bear to remove.

3M Heavy Duty Drip Check Sealer is a very specialized product for a
specific purpose. It does what it is supposed to do. I have used it under
custom paint jobs for more than 20 years. It does not shrink and crack the
paint after a short time like the product that Topeka Graphics painted
over. Using the wrong or inferior product chosen on the basis of price, not
performance, can be an exercise in futility. But, if money is that tight,
3M makes Marine Adhesive Sealant Fast Cure 5200. It comes in 10 fluid ounce
caulking tube as well as smaller hand squeeze tubes similar to toothpaste.
High quality product but not specifically designed to go under paint. It
works well on the roof seams where they are unseen.
I have had mixed success with Capt. Tolley's Creeping Crack Cure.
Does not work on metal or plastic as well as it works on wood.
But, and this is not exactly the same subject, I use Permatex
Pneumatic/Hydraulic Sealant PX # 54540 on air system fittings on the
wireless air systems that I build. 1.22 fluid ounce ( 36 ml) retails for
$65.00 USD. Talk about expensive. BUT it works. Sometimes, you gotta bite
the bullet and spend the money.

I did a seminar at the Coos Bay Rally a while back on “Caulkings and Sealants”. Some good info if you need more research.

The price of the product is not a problem. The price for shipping ($8.34 for an 8oz tube) is. IMHO YMMV

If you have an auto paint store in your locality, go pick it up there and avoid the shipping. Expect to pay more though.

Jerry, I agree that the shipping seems extreme. Might be cheaper ways out
there. It is available over the counter here.
