Good afternoon all,
The steering in my 77 PB is far left of anything good. It is a situation
where you're driving straight down the road and the next thing you know
you're heading for the shoulder or ditch.

I was driving her to the shop to change oil driving about 35 then all the
sudden she heads for the curb on my right. I turned the wheel to pull left
but by then I scuffed the sidewalls of my brand new Firestone, damnit.

After the oil change I raised the front and had my guys grab the wheels and
start pulling. Everything seemed tight except for the CV joint on the
lower steering shaft. There was quite a bit of play there. With the boot
being torn open I could see pretty well how loose it is.

I ordered up a new CV joint and boot. The heck of it is now I can't seem to
find how to r&r that piece in my maintenance manuals. I have X-7525 A & B.
Apparently I'm blind or it is not in those two. So where do I find this
procedure? Have any of you replace this part?

Thanks in Advance!

Jim,

I am going to recommend you contact Alex Ferrera. He is probably on his way or already in Branson, Missouri at the GMCMI rally. The reason I am saying this, and maybe I am off on what I am thinking, but you said you bought a new CV joint for the steering shaft, and something makes me think that is a tricky part to find?? I just want to make sure you are getting the correct part.

as for instructions on reassembly, I am not sure where those instructions are.

CV joint is at TOP of intermediate shaft. U joint is at bottom. Hope you have ordered what you think you ordered. Anyway that needs to be correct to get accurate exam of post steering box parts. With that much slop up top hard to test

Also check the clamp below the U joint at the input to the steering box. It needs to be very tight before it clamps onto the shaft. Better yet, get a grade 8 fine thread replacement nut and bolt. The fine thread makes it easier to get damn tight.

Thank you John, I went to the GMC parts book to make sure I had identified
the correct part. It is indeed on top of the intermediate shaft with the
boot on, or in this case a torn up boot.

Jon, thanks for the tip. I should have thought of that myself as he is the
steering guru.

Jim, On my unit both the cv and intermediate shaft had play. Enough that I could feel it by hand and see it.

The cv I put .001 larger spheres (McMaster-Carr), and dremel ground the slots to remove some of the bind between the worn and not worn areas.
With the intermediate shaft I inserted .001 shims (4) and the slop is gone.
As to how long the shims will last? I'll have to see, before I'll have to do it again.
Grease is very important in these parts.

I went after that wear in the slip joint about 8 years ago with brass shim stock. It took .005" in my case. After 8 years it still works fine.

James - I had sent you the link for the CV joint but it was the one for the axle, not the steering column.

I would suggest that you download the right maintenance manual for your 1977 Kingsley.
The one you referenced was for the 1975 GMC (X7525). The one you want is the X7625 and the 1977-78 supplement X7725.
These can be downloaded from the GMCMI.com site. http://www.gmcmi.com/gmcmh-manuals/

Look in section 9 for X7625 or the diagrams and instructions for the lower steering shaft including the CV joint.

Jim,

Correct clocking of each joint in the steering system is very important on the GMC. Alex Ferrera is the man when it comes to getting it right and it sounds like yours is assembled wrong. Do talk to Alex before you take it apart.
