Guys,

New problem has risen, I have been hearing a noise while driving and at first it seemed this noise, which is a metallic rubbing kind of noise, happened when making a sharp right or left turn. As of now it makes it all the time but when I put in neutral, even while moving, the noise stops. Below is an audio clip of the noise as I moved the transmission from neutral to drive several times.

My first thought was the chain drive but does the chain stop spinning when the transmission is in neutral?

Jon,

I can't make the recording play.
If the noise is related to engine speed, it stops when you stop but starts up in neutral and it sounds really nasty, but goes away at some power levels - it is the chain rubbing on the cover.

Mine did it when the snap ring holding the input shaft failed along with the press on the shaft bearing.

Two things you need to know right now.
1 - You need Manny's advice.
2 - You will have to take the transmission down if this is the problem.
That is not a terrible job, but you will get dirty.

Thanks Matt.

Sorry about the audio file I figured it might not be easy to hear. To reiterate, the sound I am hearing only happens in drive and when I place the transmission in neutral the sound stops. Either way it makes sense what you are saying. And after just replacing the head gaskets I am in mood to drop the tranny! So we will look at our budget and see about replacing the tranny with a manny tranny. But first I'll need to search for a capable shop.

Thank you all..

Jon

That sounds like something rubbing. Chain? Call Manny

And for those wondering - VLC media player plays the file. It's a free download, do a google. VideoLAN makes it available. I have yet to find a video or audio file it won't play.

On the chance that it isn't the tranny. I would pry the crank back and fourth to check the crank end play. If the thrust bearing is worn the crank could rub on the center main webbing or the crank oil slinger can rub on the front timing cover making a similar noise.
