I neglected to comment earlier on how much I am liking the Joe Gibbs 15-40 racing oil. It is laced with ZDDP and the engine exhibits a nice, cushioned sound while spinning happily at 2800 to 3000 RPMs with this 3.67 gearing. It stays cool up hill and down and the engine only gets shifted into second on long downhills. Up hill it is happy to purr in third at no less than 4" of vacuum and no less than 50 mpg if the road allows. I think I shifted into second once on a long steep uphill when the road would not support more than 40 mph.
We are now over 4000 miles and no evidence of using any oil and only a mildly darkened look to the oil on what is left of the dip stick. I also want to comment on the nice alum trans pan JimK is now selling. No evidence of any weeping like we experienced with the Ragusa alum pan. The trans oil is still at the full mark on the dip stick.
Normal disclosures, no affiliation with Joe Gibbs Oil or JimK, no compensation, etc.

Be reminded that racing oils typically have very low content of Ph stabilizers and detergents. They are meant to be raced and drained, raced and drained. They are also very high in antifoam agents, unnecessary at the RPM ranges you listed. In short the ZDDP levels may be good but the other specs are opposite of what a MH service chart looks like. No wonder the oil looks so clean, it's not cleaning and may go acidic prematurely. I recommend much shortened drain intervals miles and time if you use racing oil.

JohnL455 wrote on Fri, 03 June 2016 07:44PS another odd fact is that ZDDP at proper protective concentrations pervents galling, but actually INCREASES overall friction.
Unless you are breaking in a new cam, the ZDDP thing is pure BS and a waste of time worrying about it.

I used joe Gibbs break in oil the first 2 oil changes then valvoline racing oil the next change then Mobil 1 15/50 for the normal oil use. Joe Gibbs has oil for every day driving that a lot of folks swear by but it is a little pricy compared to most other oil. I have have been a mobile 1 user for a long time but what ever you prefer I would go with it.
