Hello gang,
I know this has been discussed ad nauseum but while at Walmart last night
looking at engine oil I have a couple questions.
I picked up a gallon of Rotella T straight 30 for the Onan.

Then for the the coach I ran across Mobil 1 10-30 High mileage 5qt jug $22.
It has the extra wear and heat protection additives.

Also, Valvoline new 15-40 HD diesel now with 25% less wear based on cam
lobe wear. Apparently updated anti wear pkg. It is a semi synthetic.
14.95/gal.

I had been using Rotella T 15-40.

I know some of you use the Rotella semi synthetic and full synthetic too.

I was just thinking it's time to move to synthetic blend or full.

Any thoughts on both the oils for the Onan and 455 would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jim Ernst

I've gotten in the habit of throwing synthetic in everything. 5W-20 in the Mouse and her minivan, 30W in the ratrod, and 15-40 in the GMCs. Change it every 5K miles along with the filters and forget about it. So far, nothing's lunched from oil problems.

Run the same oil in the Onan as you run in the engine. The Onan probably needs synth more than the engine.

Thanks Johnny and Steve for the input. I went ahead and put the straight 30
Rotella in the Onan for now and then replace with full synthetic. Our BG
rep came into the shop today and he had some of there BG 15-40 full
synthetic HD Diesel oil. They claim it's better than the equivalent
Rotella, so I'm giving that a try.

No need for synthetic in the Onan. And no need for anything other than straight 30 weight either, unless you are running it in temps under 30F. Oil needs to be changed in the Onan so often that there is no gain from synthetic. Engines the size of the one in the Onan will break down the viscosity enhancers in multivis oils faster than in an automobile engine, so you still need to stick to a conservative oil change interval.

Bottom line is there is nothing to be gained by using anything in the Onan other than straight 30 weight. But do what brings you joy.

Jim--many people here over analyse the oil thing. Frankly any commercially available oil will work just great. Depending on where you will use it--pick the best viscosity. Other than that the rest is pure hype and marketing BS.
