Why can you not just find the correct size o ring? What is it you are
trying to seal?

You have likely given up but I keep a selection around...and never leave
home without a kit. I have enclosed one form of kit but there are
cheaper..which of course I buy.

Because it's Memorial Day weekend and I don't feel like starting any
other projects. I've since found out what it takes to do this, but it
costs about $1300. Not very practical. I suppose I can't really go
back to Applied Technology.(formerly known as Bearings Inc.)
I was there three days ago looking for an -ring drive belt for a 60
year old Sun Ignition Simulator. When he asked how many I
might need, I replied that I thought I had the original, which had
lasted for over fifty years. Since I'm 80 years old, if this one lasted
the same, I would be 130 years old. Will you be here to sell me
another? He laughed and said "Get the Hell out of here, we'll get
you on the next one". I probably can't worked that scam twice. LOL

Hey, you picked up on that little story, didn't you? Well, I've been doing
a lot of cleaning
on this old piece. First thing I did was insure that the motor would still
run. Then got the
variable speed drive operating. After I mooched the correct O-ring for the
drive belt to
the distributor I put it on and -"voila"- the distributor goes round and
round.
I need to do a lot more cleaning and then figure what I need to make the
electric part
work. Finding any info on the operation of this thing is not going to be
easy. A long
time ago, there was some stuff on EvilBay, but it's all disappeared.
Of course, I'm supposed to be doing several more important things than
messing with
this thing. Things don't seem to get done as quickly as they used to.

Sounds like he's got one of the old distributor testing machines like a Sunnen or the like. You used to mount the distributor on the machine, spin it to what ever speed you wanted to check/modify the advance curves. I had one years ago but got rid of it when I moved about 9 years ago-not much use for them anymore.
Just my guess, Hal

I'll rat him out, since I played a role in it:
Might as well tell the whole long tale: One of my grandfather's best
friends, James Ethridge, ran a carburetor and ignition shop here in
Americus. Toward the end of his life, he hired a 17 year old helper. That
helper eventually took over the shop when James died. Nearing 70, he's
still in the business today and won't touch a fuel injection or electronic
ignition system (he does do mechanical diesel injectors). In his shop when
I moved here in '03 was a Sun distributor tester -- the old timey kind with
the rotating flashing strobe light. He'd acquired it when it became too
obsolete for the local trade school to bother teaching kids how to use it.
He'd only kept it to use the storage cabinet it sat on, so he offered it to
me (he needed the space to pile more old generators). I, in turn, gave it
to Gary, who's nuts about such things and collects them. But that's not
the end of the tale.
Gary REALLY wanted that storage cabinet, so I eventually had to go back to
Charlie Smith and pay him for it (using Gary's money, of course). At one
of the first GMC Eastern States rallies (Nashville, IIRC), Gary brought
along that set of equipment and did distributor testing/curving for folks.
We've had a few other adventures with it over the years, such as figuring
out how to make that old points system work with HEI distributors.
Still not the end: During another of my visits to Charlie's, I found
another HEAVY blue steel Sun box with a distributor on the sloped face and
a set of spark plugs arrayed across the top of it. That also bore a label
from Southwest Georgia Technical College, and turned out to be an "ignition
system demonstrator". It was actually fitted with essentially all the
elements of the distributor tester: Variable drive speed (via a
belt-turned turntable and movable slave wheel), strobe light, power supply,
vacuum pump, etc., so that the spark plugs could be driven for the
amazement of students. Old and decrepit; a unique antique.
I wound up with that stored in my Sea-Land container for the past 6-8+
years. FINALLY, Gary & Kara accompanied us home from GMCMI Dothan and I
made him take it home to Ohio with him. That way I should never have to
lift it again!
Thus, Gary's need to do the sneaky acquisition of a drive belt -- for the
turntable. :-)

Wow great story Ken. Along those lines I have a vintage belt driven cast
iron belt/disc sander in my attic. It is the mount on a cabinet and power
via an electric motor hanging below. Was planning on mounting it to a frame
and outing it to use. That was 10 years ago and I see it twice a year when
I get/store the Christmas stuff. :/

Gary,
Most hydraulic repair shops should be able to make an o-ring of almost any size. They should have the o-ring material in bulk. They cut off a piece the right length and glue it together.
