While talking about entry door latches, I should mention the lesson I had
refreshed at Bean Station:
Many years ago I modified my entry door so that it's impossible to lock the
door without the key. Over the years I'd forgotten how to do that. At
Bean Station, a friend had occasion to disassemble his door and lock so
that we were able to refresh my memory.
The inside lock knob -- the pull up/push down one -- has a threaded section
just below the knob. That section is fitted with a barrel nut and a lock
nut. If the barrel nut is screwed down "just the right distance", and the
lock nut resecured, the "can't lock without key" function is implemented.
Easy, huh? (Except for pulling all that stuff off to get down to there.)

Hal,
No, I didn't make photos of the opened door, and mine's all closed up. But
photos are hardly necessary since the adjustment is so simple: Just loosen
the lock nut, and screw the barrel nut down until latching the door causes
the knob to be pushed up, then retighten the lock nut. If the barrel nut
is screwed down too far, the door can't be locked at all.
