Apropos the recent discussion about auto sat finders and receivers for our GMCs the following may be helpful. The permanent mount units come in two favors, stationary and receive on the fly. Both are big for our coaches and more expensive than the carry out ones. Plus, you have to park in the clear out from under cooling trees. The carry out automatic units come in two favors as well. And, you can place them up to 50 feet away from your GMC. One is larger and uses a standard front mount LMB on an arm enclosed in a plastic cover. These often require both a power cable and a coax cable running between the sat finder and the receiver that decodes the signal into just what services you subscribe to.

The newer, smaller units use a cassegrain style antenna and pump power over the coax cable so no need for a second power cable. In that style the LNB is actually behind the dish. What is out front is a reflector that focuses the signal through a wave guide onto the LMB. The effect is the cassegrain style receives the same way a much larger dish would do. In the case of the Winegard Pathfinder this very small dish works as well as a 22" conventional dish so it picks up weak signals about 75 to 100 miles south of the border and a like distance north.

Since the US service satellites are near the equator, the further north you go, the lower they appear in the southern sky so nearby mountains will block the signal. No telling where that will occur, but don't count on reception very far into Canada for this reason.
