Hi All, I’m preparing to install my new front brakes, bearings, seals, pads, and rotors on my 73 Canyonlands. Efforts are progressing well thanks to all the information presented in this forum. I thank you all. I saved a substantial pile of money
on parts and labor. That savings funds the next project.
And I’m already planning the next project. My question: What shocks are the best to use? Without getting too technical, are there special valving available to improve handling? I’m familiar with Bosche and KYB products and was planning to use KYB. The only KYB choice seems to be one used on the front of a 78 Cadillac Eldorado. The factory was unable to help. A rear KYB factory listing is available using a part number specifically for the GMC. So I assume correct valving.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Rod

The front shocks are KYB KG5435 which you need 2 and the rears are a KYB KG5436 which you need 4. Jim K is close to you with the stuff probably in stock.

San Diego, CA First off, if you don't know about Jim Ks business, get on the internet and peruse http://www.appliedgmc.com/
Call him first or last, but if anyone in the world has, or can get, what you need, it is Jim K.
About shocks. The rears work different than conventional shocks. Most shocks have more resistance compressing than expanding. Since the rear swing arms expand the shocks when the wheels go up, those shocks are designed to have more resistance expanding than contracting. So you need the right ones.
Your basic choices are Bilstein and KYB. Jim K has had trouble getting Bilstein to honor their lifetime warranty. So get KYBs from Jim K and be done with it. The price difference between what he charges and a cost cutter on the internet is not worth the difference, keep Jim in business by giving him your business.

Rod,
Should you need any help on doing the front bearing, give me a call and I
can walk you through it as it is not a usual set up.
