Hi, Dominik,
The Zipcode is so they can make some kind of guess at what cell carrier
works in the area you're going to be in.

When prompted to enter your zipcode use 65046 (Jamestown MO) or 76825
(Brady TX) for AT&T
or
73949 (Texhoma OK) for Verizon

ATT and Verizon are most common in the US. Verizon has best coverage in
the entire US, while ATT is best in certain areas. TMobile and Sprint
are OK in certain areas, but are absolutely useless in much of the
country. Best bet is to ask folks in the areas you're going to visit
what they have, and how good the coverage actually is.
If the Tracfone you want to buy is listed as "one rate" long distance and
local are the same rate. www.tracfone.com
You can buy a Tracfone from many large stores ranging from supermarkets
to general stores. Target, Best buy, Office Depot, etc. or you can order
on line from Tracfone.

Thanks Ron, but the issue is that I'm planning to see as much of the U.S. as possible, and not just stay at a certain area.
So whilst knowing what carrier I should be using is good, I still have the issue of not being in the area that I registered my phone in, so I will be outside of the area that will be a local call. And I've never seen "one rate" phones from TracFone. I know their website, and it's clearly laid out, and I've seen them on Walmart, yes, and on eBay before - Although I will probably go to buy one at Walmart if I'll choose a TracFone.

Thanks, Dominik

All mobile phones in the US are one rate phones and have the same per minute rate anywhere in the U.S. as long as you are on your subscribed network. A Tracfone with double minutes will be 12.5 cents per minute. Net10 is 10 cents per minute. Both cover around 97% of the land mass (Tracfone is on the Verizon network and Net10 is AT&T, or vice versa), so you should be able to avoid "roaming" charges. Your phone should have an indicator when it loses its home network to tell you when you will get gouged for a call. There is probably a setting on the phone that you can make it NOT connect to another network. That MIGHT result in more dead spots, or not. 97% of the time you can call FROM anywhere in the country TO anywhere in the country for the same price per minute. Doesn't matter if you are calling mobile to mobile or mobile to landline. Unlike places in Europe, the person calling you does not pay for the call. You pay the same for incoming calls as outgoing.

I have a Tracfone, and I have used Net10 and the wife and kids have AT&T. My sister uses StraightTalk. Lots of my in-laws have Verizon. They all have excellent coverage. Roaming charges used to be the norm. Now they are the exception (unless you go with Sprint or T-Mobile or other company with not-so-much coverage area).
