I prefer to call it more of a "guideline" than a budget.

Having built a couple of dozen hot rods and various wheeled devices, I
would say that the word "budget" does not apply. I think if you really want
to keep record of how much money you spend on a project, add up all those
receipts you have collected in the box on the back of your work bench.
Scary stuff, that.

Anyone that thinks these things are an investment are only fooling themselves. The fun of working on them, no matter your skill level and the joy of meeting and sharing with others of the same persuasion makes it all worth while, IMHO. We try to keep all the receipts from work on the coach but the idea of ever tallying up the total costs will never happen. I'm sure we've put out north of $10K on the diesel swap and related incidentals over the past year or so and will never recoup that amount when we sell but it never was about the money. We just pray that we'll be permitted the time to travel and meet more of the same minded folks here. That's where the investment will pay dividends.

My last show car, a 1961 Cadillac Coupe Deville small roof, I had over
$50,000.00 including original purchase price. Worked on it over 2 years,
kept it for over 10. Drove it to Hot August Nites in Reno several times.
Many time trophy winner. Sold it when Mary got sick and needed money for
hospital bills. $18,000.00 Cash. Yeah, they are great investments. Shelter
a lot of income. But, what is the price on good times and memories these
days? Good times have no price tag. Invaluable, I would say.
