Over on the Facebook side of the universe, trying to help someone with mulitple engine issues. He posted a pic of his 403 and the manifold is an EGR type with a block off plate. Were all 403s like this even the TZE or does he have a passenger car transplant? I was thinking that since the 403 evolved later in time, they may have been made this way?

Being that I have been nose to carb on my 403 for the last few days. I also have an EGR, but it was plated and welded shut by a PO. I have no reason to believe my engine is a transplant, or that the Intake is a transplant. The documents I got with the coach were pretty complete and there is no mention of engine work.

Happy to Email you a photo or two if you PM me an address to send them.

John,
I have not seen any EGR style manifolds on the 403 engines installed in the motorhomes. The 403 was install in the 23’ transmode beginning with TZE337V101287, 26” transmode beginning with TZE367V101312 and in the 26’ motorhome beginning with TZE167V101285. My guess would be that he either has a transplant manifold or a transplant engine.

I have a late May 78 Royale 403. It does NOT have an EGR intake manifold.
There is NO mention of one in the 1978 supplemental service manual either.
I suspect a manifold swap, or complete engine swap has been performed.
Scrupulously clean the oil filler stand pipe and read the numbers stamped
on it. Also, check carefully the upper end of it. If it was a passenger car
engine, it had to be shortened to use it in a motorhome. There should be
tool marks on it if it has been tampered with, or transfered from the
motorhome engine. There are other ways to tell, but this should suffice.

Thanks guys I'll let him know the "bad" news about not original motor. I know that EGR started in 73 and not sure when 403 came out. But was thinking rather than 2 castings they might just block it off. No so it appears.

As soon as it stops pouring I will grab the casting number off my oil filler stand pipe. and post it. I am now very curious as to whether there is consensus that I too may have a non MH engine, or at least a non MH intake. Since the PO kept receipts from 20+ years ago for parts as cheap as a few bucks, not having any mention of engine stuff is interesting.

Entirely under the for what its worth category, The parts book from Cinnebar (78Z) shows a photo on page 8-8 of the exploded view of the engine (I dont know if its a 455 or 403?) . The photo anyway does show an EGR on the driver side. There are no specific part numbers in reference to this or a block off plate, but there are 3 different intakes listed.

The couple of 403s I have worked on did not have EGR.
