Does anyone have a write up for swapping out final drive units? I picked one up today from Russ Nolan, a GMCer in Chicago and going to get racy to dig into this soon. I searched all thru this site and the photo site and couldn't find any good step by step directions. Surprising, because everything I've done to my coach in the last year has been so well documented by the experts that it made e job easy. I therefore think I am somehow issuing something in my searches.

I did come across a great cradle idea that will help, and Applied GMC has a basic text document that I've printed out.

If anyone has leads or links, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Matt

Talk to Manny. Anyone who can RNR a gmc trans in 5 hours with the final
drive in place surely can give you a step by step. I helped(stayed out of
the way) him rnr my trans in a gravel driveway last year. Nothing short of
miraculous.

A few hints. Be sure to tack glue the gasket between the final drive and transmission in place before raising the final drive and use care that you don't rip it. Use two long bolts in the bottom holes. Those will act as "rails" so that the final drive engages properly. After putting in the rest of the bolts replace those with the proper bolts.

The upper left bolt (looking at it from the front) is almost impossible to get in. I have done it with a flex joint and a long extension but it's ok to just leave it out. That also makes it easier to remove the final drive in the future.

I have installed mine twice by myself balancing it on a floor jack while getting the long bolts into the bottom holes but it would be easier to have a helper.

Matt,

I don't have detailed instructions nor photos, but I do have a some
suggestions that may be useful:

1. The most difficult part of the task, IMHO, is doing the assembly
without damaging the gasket. To eliminate that problem, I made a gasket
guard: A plastic gasket (mine was 3/8" thick, but 1/8" would be plenty)
identical to that to go between the FD and transmission was cut. Then cut
that plastic gasket into two pieces, slotting the holes in such a way that
the gasket will stay in place during assembly, but can be removed after FD
& tran. are mated. Place the gasket on the trans., then the 2-piece
plastic guard just made, then mount the FD. Now remove the 2 piece gasket
guard before snugging up the FD by tightening the bolts. Oh -- be sure
you're using the correct laminated gasket set with the ventilation holes at
the top; otherwise you'll have FD lube leaks.

2. Install 2 studs at the bottom of the transmission to guide the FD into
position; slots in their outer ends make them easy to remove when the FD is
secured with other bolts.

3. The cradle you've located may be a better idea, but just in case: I
use a support device made from a heavy steel plate bent into an L, large
enough to bolt the vertical leg to the driver's side axle flange of the FD
with two bolts. On the horizontal leg, extending UNDER the FD, either afix
a large enough nub (beneath the center of the FD) to replace that on the
bottom of your floor jack's saddle, or bolt that flange to the top of the
jack. Now the main weight of the FD can be supported by the jack while the
FD's aligned on the aforementioned studs and bolted in place. Attachment
to the axle flange allows the FD to be tilted fore and aft for alignment.

Since the exposed driver's side axle flange is fixed in space by the
adapter, you'll need to devise a way to reach into the passenger side axle
cavity and turn the half-axle socket there. You'll probably need to do
that to align the splines between the FD and the transmission. The
half-axle can be used, but somewhat clumsily.

Oh yeah. Almost forgot: 4. IF you have a clean work area and can keep
debris out of the FD with the cover removed, do so -- the extra 1+" of
space between the steering cross link and the transmission will make the
whole job easier.

HTH,

Thanks for the tips! I pulled my FSM out just a few minutes ago and it does give some good info, better than other jobs I've tried to use it for reference.

Looks like I'm going to have to scrounge for some old cutting board. I liked Ken H's design for the gasket protector and experience tells me I shouldn't cut up any of the wife's things.

Are there any special sockets required to unbolt the axle shafts? I seem to recall 12-point fasteners when I was last under there, but that was several months ago...

Thanks again for all the great help!

Matt

Manny,
That was the second one i have ever done back 15 years ago and I had one
heck of a time stopping a transmission leak till Bob Lamey came over and
suggested I use RTV around the O ring.
I know your sitting back and laughing at me again.
You showed me few tricks and learned from that.
People have a hard time believing me when I tell them you can drop a trans
and install a new one and drive off in around 3 1/2 hours.

Matt,

That's correct, you'll need a 12 point socket for the axle flange bolts --
3/8" IIRC.

In describing the gasket guard, I should have mentioned that the holes
where the studs are to be removed need not be slotted -- just remove the
guard after the studs are removed.

IIRC, the manual does not mention that the top inner bolt is nearly
impossible to reach. Hopefully, yours is not installed. If it is, you'll
probably have to buy or make what we used to call a "starter wrench". It's
a closed end wrench with a sharp lateral curve so that you can reach
beneath the manifold/header and turn that bolt -- about 1 flat at a time.
When reinstalling the FD, don't even try to re-install that bolt -- it will
never be missed.

Speaking of RTV around the O-ring (I'm assuming for the trans dipstick tube), I couldn't find a part number for the O-ring. Is it just a common ring that would probably be in my mass O-ring case?

We use RTV to augment the O ring seal, seem to work for all our GMC shops..
