Hi Justin,

For the major machining areas in the studio I used eight of these:

8x Thinklux LED Fluorescent Replacement Tube - 4 Foot - 18 Watt - Ballast Bypass - DLC Qualified - Shatterproof - 4000K / 1 Piece

Along with four of the Costco two tube LED fixtures.

The rest of the lighting in the studio is via PAR30 LED bulbs in hanging fixtures (15 as I recall) and about 20 or so LED PAR20 bulbs in the gallery area.

The great thing about the LEDs is they do not flicker, emit a light that is more consistent in color than the florescent tubes and last way longer without dimming. I use 4000-5000 degree Kelvin in the studio work areas to provide near daylight color, and 3000-3500 degree Kelvin in the wood selection areas and the gallery which is about what most people have in their homes these days..

Jerry,
I have large metal halide lamps in my shop and would be interested in which LED's you went with. Mine are power hogs and not bright enough. A lot of
small imperfections go unnoticed until it's in the paint booth.

I had to replace the tubes every other year in the 4' fixture in the kitchen until I replaced them with LEDs. I used the 12W Philips LED tubes. I had to change the ballast to one that was compatible. The tubes and ballast were around $20 each, so it cost me right at $100 to convert the fixture, not counting my minutes to do the ballast replacement. I don't know the color temperature, but they are 117 lumens per watt, which is as good as I have seen in LEDs. 12W per tube vs 40 for the flourescents. So I got as much light at roughly a quarter the electricity. Ignoring that, if I don't have to change the tubes for 8 years, they will pay for themselves without even counting kilowatthours.
