I recently purchased a new distributor and plug wires from Dick Paterson. I want to change out the spark plugs when the distributor is changed. I have been reading about the E3 spark plugs and I am always hesitant to believe the claims of the inventor of a new "mouse trap". Does anyone have any experience with the E3 spark plug either positive or negative. I would also be interested in hearing what plugs people have had the best results with. I have a 78 GMC but the PO swapped the 403 for a 455. Thank you, I look forward to reading all comments.

Bob,
I have run the E3 plug for the last 14000 miles and have not had any issues or problems. I will be home next week after another 2210 miles and plan to pull a few to check condition. The motor has always run well and pulls the hills and mountains without problems

Bob,

I installed a set in 2014 and since then put on about 7K miles on them. So far seems to perform well, no issues at all. I also have a Dick Paterson distributor and wires.

I also have a new Patterson distributor and wires to install. I forgot to ask Dick what he recommended for plugs. I will be interested to see what other recommendations we might get here. I can't imagine it would be like oil or tire wars, so I will ask; What other plugs do you recommend besides the E3? If you run E3, which specific part nubmer?

Can you gap an E3? You can on an AC.

John,

You don’t need to gap the E3 plug. Gap is preset from the factory and is non adjustable. See the following:

Exactly. And therein lies the problem. How do they know if you have a 455 with points and resistor wire or HEI? I have driven cross country and never felt a hint of miss or missfire with GM ACDelco plugs. Why try to fix something that is proven. I understand that with multiple ground electrodes it jumps to the easiest path and as one wears it may jump to one of the others. So why not 6 or 12 electrodes? At 3 i think it presents a barrier to flame front propagation. I think if these were so good the big 3 would have gone to them long ago to get any tiny increase in CAFE and 125,000mi emissions. They have not.

Thanks to everyone for their replies and opinions. After I posted the initial questions, I spoke with Dick Paterson. He is still recommending the NGK plug that is listed in John's chart. I decided to heed the Guru's advice and went with his recommendation. Thanks again to all.
