From the large plate on the door it appears to be an early 1973 model.

Whats concerning is the news anyway indicated they could not locate the owner or person driving it.

yeah that is a little weird.....after the trouble Bob had with the fire marshall and his "convertible", this guy fleeing the scene and leaving a gas tank beside the door isn't going
to help getting a payout from the insurance no matter how innocent the actual circumstances.

all in all another good reason to get a fire suppression systems fitted....

Maybe the driver had a heart problem and went to the hospital.

You need to have your coach with at least few of the Fire Fight Portable as
a bare minimum.
The reason why it must be that brand is all about damage to the wiring when
you need to repair it.
Other units are corrosive and it's a nightmare to clean, while the Fire
Fight is non corrosive.

From what I can see on the video, it looks like engine
compartment/transmission area on fire. Looks like a FIRE FIGHT on board
system should have handled that one before it got fully involved. I have a
halon system in my engine compartment, and both the Jim's carry the AAAF
FOAM SYSTEMS IN STOCK. DARN CHEAP INSURANCE WITH EVENTS LIKE THIS. If you
don't have these on your "to do tomorrow" list, why not?

We have to encourage all owners to inspect and maintain there fuel delivery systems. With a little maintenance fuel related fires can usually be prevented.

I have had several GMCs into my Edmonton, Alberta shop and found the following common problems:

- Rubber fuel line from pump to carb. This should be the OEM steel line or at least an aeroquip braided line.
- Deteriorated rubber fuel lines. Old line should be replaced at least from the fuel selector valve to the fuel pump.
- 3 Line Fuel pumps with 2nd outlet capped. Install the correct pump (you can get them in the US and I am now keeping a few in stock in Canada.)
- Electric pumps with no safety shut off. An electric pump should shut off if the engine is not running and the key in in the ON or ACC position.

Don't forget about the rubber lines to the vapor canister and vent. I have seen these split or not connected.

I also had one coach in the shop that had one of the rubber connectors on the filler tube fail while he was fueling. If these are deteriorated they should be replaced.

Fire suppression systems are great and with proper maintenance of the fuel system hopefully you never have to rely on it.

Belt and suspenders kind of guy. I like it!
No such thing as being too well prepared for a fire. It is a serious issue.
Not to be scoffed at or ignored. We can't afford to lose any GMC owners or
their families or pets.

Yeah, kind of. Ralph installed the ss50 hylon plus hylons behind the frig and
generator years ago. Last year JimB thought foam would be better in
the engine compartment so I installed a ss50 foam prototype that was laying around
on a shelf. It was felt to be too old to sell so I got a good deal on it.
Didn't see a reason to undo the ss50 hylon being that it is still good and there
was room for both.

Jim,

Being the pedantic bastard that I am, it's Halon. ;-)

Also considering Ben's quote; "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."

Rob,

I never was good at spelling or languages. That's why I
took Engineering up. Those words that I can't spell I can
abbreviate. Yeah I know, there is spell check but I'm so bad
that most of the time I can't even get a match.

...but I get by. Wink

Hope to see you in a few days.

The driver ran off? Perhaps the coach was stolen?

Its strange. The report said the "older man" ran into the station, got a fire extinguisher, when back into the coach and then disappeared.

I think if someone stole it they would just go, and not try to put it out. From the photos it does not look like they were refueling, as it was not near the pumps.

Just speculation at this point. but maybe it was already on fire and thats where he/they pulled over to check it out, or it just took on 50 gallons of fuel and got a few feet from the pumps, or, or, or.....

I was hoping someone would recognize the coach. know the owner. provide some clues as to what happened. If anything its possibly another TZE to scratch off the list.

It looks like someone put a few dollars into it. Ramco mirrors, possibly Alocas..... If its abandoned it may end up at a police auction cheap.
