Engine -- Original or Replacement? [message #297951] |

Just asking:
Currently my '76 Eleganza is undergoing a 455 ci engine transplant. The question has been raised as to whether or not the engine being removed from the coach (approximately 115,000 miles on the odometer) is the original, factory installed engine. Are there any key indicators on the engine or elsewhere that would enable one to determine if the engine was factory installed or had been previously replaced?
As the fourth owner of this coach I have very few maintenance records and invoices from the previous owners.

When I bought my coach it was 11 years old and had 95000 miles on it . It had a bad exhaust valve on it so I pulled the heads , at this time I thought I might as well remove the engine and check the bearings to be sure all was good. It was a good move on my part as # 7&8 rod bearings were bad. I had a spare engine from a vista cruiser so I rebuilt it and installed it along with the mh lntake and pan. All these years I figured the engine I had removed was the original till last year when I discovered the casting number on the block had a factory replacement number on it rather then the number that would have been on it if it were the original?! So some time in the first 11 years of its life there was an engine change before I got it. From the stretch on the timing chain I would say it was replaced early in its life. When you pull your motor if the rod or main bearings aren't standard or if the bore isn't standard it has been rebuilt. Or if the casting number has a factory replacement number it isn't original

This is a totally un-factual answer, but as 9th owner of ours(had for 19
years now), I'd guess it's original but that the mileage is at least
double of what the odometer says. Mileage will show up better when the
bearings are examined from the old heart!

After pulling the engine there is a date stamp under the #1 spark plug
(water plug)
First number 3 (Olds) second number should be a 6 (year) third letter M
(Lansing ) the rest of the number are untraceable but pertained to type of
vehicle install in.
When I pulled my engine out of a 1976 PalmBeach I discovered that it had a
1972 block with G heads on it. G heads for the Tornado and 442 had bigger
intake valves (2.070") unknown to me at the time that I sold the block and
heads.

The actual serial number in an Olds block is on the oil filler pipe. It is
really hard to see. If you can find it, pm me and I will try to decipher it
for you.

GM didn't follow the Mopar style of stamping the series number of the VIN on the block skirt on our motorhomes. Which has led to a certain number of counterfeit 'numbers matching' classics on the market.
