I was asked by another forum to give a 'privacy review' of my locked-down FB account. They were/are dealing with FB-paranoid users while migrating a forum to a FB group. The following is mostly a cut-n-paste, so some sentences might seems out of place.
Quote:
The vast majority of FB's "security risk" is derived from the composite the USER gives them (or, perhaps, your smartphone's contact roster). Employment, colleges, circle of friends ...the various & sundry dribbles of info -when made available for assembly, even crude algorithmic assembly- that's where the risk lies. To keep from hurting anyone's feelings, you may need to explain to your family ahead of time that this is a special account and you won't be friending anyone.
Do this from a desktop, NOT your smartphone. There has been some authoritative speculation that FB reads your phone's contact files. I also gave them a Google Voice phone number that I don't really use. I did give them my correct age, gender, and email address.
I used this tutorial to do the original gutting of the account
http://www.komando.com/tips/12299/step-by-step-guide-to-lock-down-your-facebook-profile/all
Being unfamiliar with the menu layout, it took me about 45 mins to dig down and turn off all that crap.
I then let the account sit for about 3 months to see if there were any noticeable upticks in email spam. Nothing happened.
So then I went in and joined a group of about 1200 members. Nothing happened.
So then I went in and joined a newly forming group which was forking from the larger group. Nothing happened.
Lately, I've purposely been clicking through on some individual members' pages. FB weakly tries the "you may know" stuff, but they seem to have even given up on that lately.
>stick with a forum
Agreed. But the problem is demographics. IF you want younger members to be active and grow the user base, you're going to have to go FB. They literally scream when you try to make them use a forum format, hhh. I'm certain that this is largely a smartphone access issue, but the ease and ubiquity of FB apps --*particularly* photo-handling-- gives FB a huge edge in member recruitment.
>upload of contacts
This is why I think a throwaway G voice number is crucial.
>who's tracking
It's the lack of re-targeting that puzzles me the most. (I used my public email address in the profile, btw.) Yes, my laptop browser defenses may be formidable but I purposely surf FB and other sites with an anemically fortified chrome browser on the ipad2. I use a fair number of sites (tools, home hardware) that are notoriously good re-targeters, imo, and I'm not seeing them. That 1200+ group (auto maintenance) should be a natural for re-targeting if only based on the group's focus.
>age, gender
Maybe they don't want old men, heh.

Dennis, that's the old post. Let me emphasize that you need to spend a fair amount of time up in the settings killing stuff. We have a saying in my online world ..."It's the defaults, stupid! It's *always* the defaults!" They set it up like they want, knowing that everybody just rushes merrily ahead.
The other biggie:
"this is a special account and you won't be friending anyone"
It's hard to turn down a friend request from your granddaughter.
ZERO input about your college, job, etc.
Turn off chat. Use FB messaging only as a last resort.

I do it because that was part of my online business. I'm still called in to play a hand or two every now and then.
Mostly, I think, it's a fear of being spammed. That's still a marginally legitimate reason.
Then there's ad-tracking. That's a privacy issue --but the long & short of it is that the average, no, even the above-average tech-type can't shake that nowadays. I can, but even with tools of my trade it takes more effort than it's worth.
As for security ...I bite my lip here a lot. There is enough personal travel and location data spewed here and on other sites by members that if anyone WERE tracking them, well... And their address is on the Blacklist.

I constantly hear people getting lathered up about FB privacy. There just a few things that will go a long, long way to making FB usable (and perhaps even enjoyable) without giving away your Internet travels to the advertisers and bad guys.
1) Set up a separate user account on your computer for FB use. Log into that account, do your FB stuff, then log out and go back to your everyday account for all other activities. Don’t do ANYTHING in the FB user account other than FB. It isn’t a bad idea to have yet another account on your computer to use for financial and banking transactions only. This technique keeps tracking cookies and other data compartmentalized within individual accounts - not to mention that it can help mitigate the damage from a malware infection.
2) Don’t give FB any more information about yourself than you would give a stranger in a supermarket. Make up a name if you want to - they don’t have any way of checking that it is really you or if the information you provide is accurate.
3) And for goodness sakes, don’t post your vacation plans - or pictures that you’ve taken while on vacation - until you get back home!

If this forum is dedicated to gathering and disseminating information about the GMCmh for & by its members, then showing a member how to tap another GMC resource is on-target.

I'm with RC on this one. This forum may be a better resource but Facebook has quickly become a much more active community. You can belong to both and if you are more comfortable doing so with RC's limited account instructions then there is nothing wrong with helping people be part of both.

Do not add any photos of any sort. Google and Facebook have become among the leaders in applying AI to photo recognition and can now programmatically determine content, approx time & date, and location from the subject matter of the photo. And that's without accessing the *easy* metadata stuff contained within the photos binary --GPS, Caption, and Timestamp, Tagging, and massive amounts of other data that is now being embedded in your photos. Search on EXIF, IPTC, XMP, ...nevermind, read here
http://www.photometadata.org/META-101-metadata-types
and here
http://www.photometadata.org/META-101
In short, much of who you are and even where you live can be and is being extracted from your photos without your knowledge. This type of data-gathering is being ramped up a lot now because it circumvents Europe's new-ish cookie-killing laws.

Virtually every website a person connects to will run scripts (usually permitted by default) and track your visits, so in order for this technique to work effectively - you'd really need a separate user account for every website you visit…

The ease of adding pictures on FB is one of its main features, IMO.
I geotag all my pictures - I'm worried less about the world knowing the exact location of my camping spot last October than having my full postal code in the Blacklist. In retrospect I would have preferred to omit it.
I'm surprised at how many people that I know that say they're concerned about privacy and tracking etc…, but happily carry a cell phone in their pocket!!

It's at the top of this thread on the forum or you'll have to find it somewhere in your emails/digest. But I think most of it can be summarized here:
"Do this from a desktop, NOT your smartphone. There has been some authoritative speculation that FB reads your phone's contact files. I also gave them a Google Voice phone number that I don't really use. I did give them my correct age, gender, and email address.

I still don't get it.
What is everyone afraid of?
I can see thieves knowing you're out of town from your photos, but that's a no brainer and has been an issue since long before the internet.
Why do you care if someone knows where you took a photo? Are you afraid of being murdered if you go back to the same place?
Why does anyone care if facebook and google tailor ads to what you look at? I think it's kind of convenient.
I can't tell if I am the crazy one for not being afraid, or if everyone else is crazy paranoid like the CIA is out to get them.
I mean hell, I can go in the phone book and get millions of different people's addresses if I wanted to rob someone, how is that different than the internet?
I'm not trying to be confrontational, I really am just curious as to what everyone is afraid of.

You can't escape it even then. Adobe -benevolent (suspicious, eh?) benefactor of all things pdf and flash- has developed a way to track you *between* sites and also the multiple devices you use to access the internet.

Since I asked RC how to set up a FB account I'll answer..
We tried setting up an account and ended up with a screen full of ads --probably more slack of understanding of what/how we could format the page and account settings. Some options seemed buried three pages deep.
And if folks like RC who are more knowledgeable limit the FB settings in their own account -- well, I thought it was worth understanding how.
Maybe it's like fuel injection for the GMC -- I may not install it but I kinda like to know how it works.

Town and email would have been better. For some reason, I thought (probably falsely) that more info may help at some point. Zip codes in the USA cover a HUGE number of people. In Canada, a postal code can be as few a several houses. Oh well - I'll move some day…
I do this for a living. Some of my clients are very paranoid (rightfully so in some cases) of their data privacy. Usually, their biggest fear isn't staying safe from the traditional "internet bad guys", it's usually centred around several departments in the US gov't. Having said that - our last gov't passed some laws that are just as Draconian...

I think you missed the point.
If you have a solution for a Yugo problem, you do not go to a Ford forum to tell the Yugo owners users how to fix their Yugo problems even though both forums have to do with cars.
Yes, some subset of users might own or drive both.
