Update on my saga to get a 1973 GMC 26 from North Carolina to Massachusetts:

The original plan was for the current owner to drive it up from NC to Springfield, VA where we would meet up and I would drive it home the rest of the way.

It did not make it to the the rendezvous yesterday. It kept kicking out of gear. At first he thought it was the linkage, but adjusted it according to the maintenance manual and the problem persisted. This morning when he opened it up this morning to see if there was a simple solution on the inside the transmission fluid came out black. This is a rebuilt trans with less than 3,000 miles. He changed the trans fluid just before leaving and that fluid looked fine from the first 2500 miles on the rebuild.

I've rented a car and am on my way down to Madison, VA to the transmission shop he is having it towed to.

If the transmission is toast are there any of Manny's transmission staged for emergency use on the East Coast? If so, what's the going rate for one?

Any other thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Also on FB. Probably a bad fitting Chinese filter sucked air and slipped the trans. If a trans is slipping, don't drive it. Someone posted to contact Ken Frey

Ken .h may still have one in Americus, GA. He's on Black List. Transmission re-built by Manny, has never been installed, if he still has it. Ken, Manny with Stick as go-fer re-built several at Ken's place.

Sorry, but the last Manny Tranny I had was picked up about 2 weeks ago. No
more likely before August.

I also use to have one stocked here but it got used. The next time someone is coming this way from Central California we will get another one here. I talked to Manny about a replacement at the last GMCMI rally. It would not have helped you much in Virginia even if I had one here.

RC,

With all due respect the ONLY person that can answer that question with any credibility is Manny himself!

Ken H stored the trannies we rebuilt with Manny with chain cover sitting flat with tranny pointed up. Short hoses connected the lines in a loop. Torque converters installed Tranny filled to the brim with fluid per Manny instructions.

I *think* I've asked him while we were down at the co-op. IIRC, the answer was in months, not years.

I store Manny Tranny's in my shop long term. He now ships them with chain
case down, torque converter installed, and fluid full. My shop is heated
and never goes below 45° F. Salem is not humid. Your conditions may vary. I
would say that they have more failures due to installation errors (under
fill on fluid) being at the top of the list. But, Manny is the last and
final authority on storage.

More than ten years ago, a GMCer asked me to store a tranny for him and I
did. Three years later, someone broke down nearby and I decided to check on
that tranny. I emptied it and found alot of flies in the fluid. That
worried me so I tore it down but all the seals and gaskets were fine. We
installed that tranny on that coach that broke down and never heard from
them again.
In cold climates, to store a tranny for a year or more is to have sit on
the chain cover with the converter installed. The cooler holes need to be
plugged and the vent elbow capped. Ad a couple of gallons of fluid and
rotate the converter counter-clock-wise to fill it. Add more fluid,
probably three more gallons till its at the top. Cover the top with tape
and something heavy to seal it. Flies love the fluid.
At the Coop, I don't fill it up with fluid but I do bag the tranny so no
flies get in. The trannies there only last a few months. Once there was one
with a ripped bag so I tore it down and it was a good thing because there
was a centipede bug in the valve body blocking a bleed hole. I also don't
have the freezing cold in the winter.

So, in hellatiously humid areas (Orlando is arid by comparison) that usually have 3 or 4 days in the the 20's per winter, there is no hope of storing one?

The biggest enemy is moisture. The one I had stored here was allowed to cool way down below freezing which meant there was minimal moisture left in the air. Then I made sure it was full of trans fluid as described in the previous posting. After that I double plastic bagged it and pumped all of air possible out of the bags. Then the bags were sealed and the trans was stored inside at a near constant 65 degrees F. This prevented moisture from condensing on the inside parts which would normally occur during seasonal cold to warm temperature changes.

I should have added to the original post that I bagged the trans at around +15 F. After double bagging and pumping out the air, I wrapped it again with an additional layer of shrink wrap. It sat here for a couple of years at +65 F before I delivered it to Tennessee to go into a stranded coach.

Without resorting to unrealistic and/or prohibitively costly measures, I'd have to submerge the whole tranny in atf within a container that could be sealed after displacing the air.

If you do not want to pack it with cold low moisture air then simply double bag it and fill the bags with nitrogen which will displace most of the high moisture air. Seal the bags and store at a near constant temperature.

I wouldn't trust bagging (nor temps) in the warehouse where I'd have to keep it. If submersion would work (?), that's a possibility. (I have custom IBS totes and a forklift available.
