There are many things in life I don't understand. One of those things is
batteries.
"group 24 batteries gel filled 12v/ 74 amp hours"
Would these be any good as house batteries? I think I know that 2 6s are
better than 2 12s, but......
Thanks

Hi Michael, you are going to get 17 different correct answers. I
personally like Trojan golf cart batteries. I think the number 105 is the
one that I use. They are 6 volt and are made to deep cycle. That means that
they are ok to discharge a good bit further than standard automotive
batteries. I use 6 volt batteries, use the positive post of one battery,
and the negative post of the other one. Then connect the other remaining
posts together. It will yield 12 volts at nearly twice the ampere rating of
one by itself. 2 batteries suit my needs very well, but your demand for
electrical use will be different than mine. I use Die Hards for my engine
battery, and I use an identical one on the same tray that serves as a boost
battery. I do not have a huge battery cable from the front of the coach to
the house batteries in the generator compartment, but use a 6 gage cable
for charging from the engine alternator. Just what I do.

The other end of the spectrum. I don't dry camp. One show I sometimes work has no electric hookup, I run the genset. Consequently, my house battery needs only to keep the icebox cold when I stop for a meal or fuel, and while I set the coach up before I get power on it or the genset running. So, for me, the cheapest 12V I can find. I've a solar charger which keeps it charged when the coach is parked at home.

Like Jim says, you'll get lots of different correct answers. Most of the 12 volt batteries that claim to be 'deep cycle' are really a compromise and and really don't compete well with a true deep cycle like the T105's or L16's or other true deep cycle batteries. You will notice that deep cycle 6 volts normally are taller to accommodate the garbage that will collect at the bottom of the cells over time and eventually will short out and kill the battery. You'll want to be careful of the T125's and T145's as they have added capacity at the expense of longevity by adding thinner plates. There are 6 volt AGM's available if you really want to go there but any time you get away from wet cells you'll pay the price-almost twice the cost.
One way to use wet cells would be to use an semi automatic watering kit with vents. I use those on my L16's in a nearly closed bay in my SOB. I currently use a pair of US Battery 2200 series 6 volts that are 236 AH in the GMC.
To each their own for sure.

Gentlemen
I had 2 6's but at least one froze over the winter. I haven't pulled
the tray out yet to count, but I can guess. I thought this would be a
shortcut to decent capacity at a fraction of the cost as they were a
private sale.
I've read your comments and as Lorraine suggested, perhaps I'll just do
it right and save myself some aggravation down the line.
Thanks all

Mike,
If the battery was fully charges, there is considerably less chance to
freeze up.

Mike,
As was said, you got lots of correct answers.
One of those will be fine if you don't really need a house bank. Just don't use two.
Even in Nova Scotia, if you had a battery freeze, it is toast.

To store any vehicle, the negative cables should be disconnected as soon as parked. This prevents a slow parasitic death and eliminates electrical fire potential. I learned this fire marshal code from doing car show events for the Big 3. If the car is not being used in a reveal segment the battery must be disconnected indoors. And no vehicle to have more than 1/4 tank fuel. I have followed this with vehicle storage strictly and with monthly trickle/desulfination charger use I right now have a still usable OEM Delco group 78 from 1996 where the Delco eye is still green and functioning. Also an occasional fresh water rinse especially on top terminal batteries can cut down on parasitic conduction drains.
