It appears the tube is broken at engine because I can't get the dipstick to seat properly and I think I might have overfilled it,how much extra oil is ok and is this an easy fix. Thanks, Allan

Allan the hard part is getting the tube out of the block, I was lucky and it pretty much came right out. Here are pics of the operation.
Not mine but the same deal.

appie,

I've got a sciatic nerve acting up but I'll try to measure the tube on mine this afternoon, or at least from the block to the junction. I not sure if the junction is the same on all coaches.

Allan,

Welcome to the group, family, cult, asylum....

If you over fill the lube oil, it seems to cause little problem with these engines, but the top quart will go away real fast.
If I do a lube service an refill with 6 quarts, it will be a quart down in about 500 miles (455). If I put that quart back in, it will be gone again and just as fast. But, if I only use a 5 quart fill, it will not be down another pint for 1500~2000 miles.

I have access to both a 403 and a 455, if you tell me what you need, I will try to get that number for you.

You would seem to be new here, and you may soon discover what we know. Your GMC will be much more than just another toy, it will be a part of your life. That is because of the community it has connected you to. As you may have already figured out, you have become a member of a community like few others. This is a group of supportive and helping people. The only way I know to annoy them is not by asking too many questions, but by ignoring the answers and not paying attention. There is an experience base here that is still hard for me to get my arms around and I have been here a while. It so reminds me of the watermen of my world that I have taken to welcoming new owners much as an new owner or vessel is welcomed there. So,

May the Good Lord bless this coach and all those that set forth within her.

Welcome Allen

Matt

Well its not the easiest thing to measure with going between the exhaust manifold and the head. However on my 1977 455 from were it emerges at the top of the exhaust manifold/head it is 6 3/8" to the middle of the dipstick tube joint.

Hope that helps.

Anyone replacing a dipstick tube should probably take a look at these
photos which show what can happen if the tube's not "aimed" just right.

Right Ken. Those are the pics that made me order a new tube from applied. I assumed that would be the right length If it is to long that would make me verfill with oil.
Jim will you reflect on this?

The tube has an flair to guide one to get to the correct position.
I went out to our parts bin and found one that came from another supplier.
it measured 12"
from the flair.
I'll have Gary or Nick find out for me.
