I'm starting a new thread ilo ROOF PAINT.

Well, this week started week 2 of stripping ANNIE's roof for ROOF MOLDING
(as per the GMC description manual) or as we around here call it SIDE DRIP
RAILS, new sealant, paint and misc. what the heck is that.

Monday and Tuesday morning was a wash waiting for an open bay at the COOP.
Was under a "car port" of such but with all of the roof penetrations exposed and heavy
rain in the forecast we had to get ANNIE in an enclosed bay. Tuesday after
lunch we stripped off the two awnings and moved her in doors. Now started
pulling off the Rubber covers that a PO had installed ilo Roof moldings when
ANNIE painted. Screw holes are there so it looks like the moldings were trashed
and replaced with rubber. At first glance I thought I would be at the paint stage
by the end of this week. No way. Looks like I have about at least another week to
week and a half of digging out old sealant and prep for paint.

Hey Jim
What are you doing about screwing on the new drip rails? Do you need to drill and tap new holes?
I'm very interested in your progress as I need to regoop my drip rails and I suspect I'll be drilling and taping 50 of the 50 holes.

George,

Back in 2008 I R&R'd the drip rails on Double Trouble down at the Coop, a year later I was back doing some more work and another
GMCer was doing his, he was a lot smarter than I was and used Torx head SS screws:

http://www.mcmaster.com/#machine-screws/=11a6bya

I got lucky and only broke several OEM screws off which I had to drill out and re-tap. It was a PITA to locate the center and drill
out the OEM screws without drifting off and messing up the holes in the aluminum frame the drip rails attached to.

George and Rob,

So far I'm only seeing one broken off screw and one broken roof rivet.
I have bought Torx head SS screws to go back on and will reinforce before
and after the broken roof with new. We'll see if the screw holes from the
'78 Roof Mold line up with my '73 screw holes. If not we'll be drilling
and tapping. The BIG job right now that I see is digging the 3 generations
of old sealant and dirt out of the grooves under where the roof molds will
cover. ....then sanding and new sealants.

George, little secret: If you will be removing OEM screws, they will be steel
Torx head except the 4 on the end caps that will be steel head Phillips screws.
When removing the screws, tap on them first to try and break the rust bond.

Yeah.....

Have been working digging out the hockey pucky repair(?) job that was
under the roof moldings. '73s had moldings just not w/ the gutters. So
this can be called an upgrade. The repairs were a bear. Looked like
they used tar, 3M sealer, caulk and sillycone. But finished cleaning
that phase this evening. Only the last 6 inches at the rear pass. side
cap has been water damaged with rot. We'll see how intensive it is in
the morning and then make a patch from a donor coach. Will also start
sanding the rest of the roof and prepping for paint.

I can think of another word for it. ....... but fun?

At least I have a new appreciation for the coach. It has fought me
literally every inch of the way, up one side and down the other.
And I have learned that any job will take 4 or 5 times longer to do
and don't even try to put a price on the initial estimate at first
glance.

If you're curious -- Bill Bryant says the gutters appeared on 1973 coaches about V102008-V102024.
Thanks for the updates.

Stick,

Take what you feel and multiply that times 3. That's how my neck and
shoulders feel. Going to my chiropractor tomorrow afternoon then take
the weekend to rest it all.

I'm getting too old for fun stuff like this.

Thanks Dennis. I didn't know where the break was made. Any way, ANNIE will
be sporting a set of gutter moldings from a '78 Royal soon.

Ok, Thursday came and went. Addressed sillycone issues at the front and rear cap
seams, digging them out. Then removed pucky from the TV antenna, one of two
FANTASTIC VENTS, rear clearance lights, & awning seams. Tomorrow will finish up the
rest of the misc. seams. Kevin wants to sand and prep the roof Saturday, when there
are no distractions. Then paint sometime early next week give it a day or so then
start reassembling.

I don't have any sealants with silicone in my shop. That stuff is miserable
to remove completely. The slightest bit of residual will prevent other
sealants or many paints from bonding. I hate it. One of my previous owners
filled everything with silicone seal, then covered it over with bondo type
filler. Talk about a bitch to remove.

George,

Only have one screw that has to be convinced to come out, but should be able to get
a pair of vice grips on it and take it out. The rest all came out nice and clean.
I matched some SS screws from FASTENAL. We'll just wait and see if the plan comes
together. If we have to drill and tap I'll let you know.

JimH,

I think I can truthfully say "I feel your pain". Jim, this the hardest
prep job I've ever tried. Thank God that I have Kevin (a true paint and
body man) to get me started in the morning and make sure a couple times a
day that I'm on still on course. Some POs and their shops did some bad stuff
to the old girl, but we are making it right. The work today was not as hard
or intense as the last week's was. I'm still hurting tonight but not as bad
as the last few days. I guess my days as an officer spoiled me for hard
labor, but I'll live and survive.
