The wiring rats nest behind the control panel, in the frig cabinet. Mine is almost straightened out. And I now understand the mess. There are 14 wires that leave that panel. And go to the rear on the left frame rail. This info is based on the Royales that have the frig across from the entry door. I now have all 14 identified by color. Of that 14. 5 to the black water tank. Another 5 go to the gray water tank. And 4 go to the generator. I've put different colored electrical tape on each wire set. If any of these wires are damaged. And now are too short. The wire required to fix these wires is behind the control panel. Then there is a red, and white wires that go to the LP tank gauge. Next there are 2 light gray wires that come from a 12 volt source near the VIN tag. Both have in line fuse holders attached to them up front. I need some help in finding out what these two wires opperate. They both come up thru the floor at the rear of the water heater. The mice chewed these wires up. But I think that they run the water heater, and frig. If someone could check this out. That would be of great help to me. On the inside. There are two wires that control the furnace. One light blue. The other is white. These wires connect to the 12 v, thermostat, and furnace. Then there are 5 more wires that go to the water tank. More details to come. If I can be of help to anyone on this wiring. You're more then welcomed to contact me.Bob Dunahugh78 Royale.

Id be curious on the two wires with inline fuses as well. I thought it was a PO job. But now it doesn't seem that way. I'm staying tuned.

Wayne. I too thought it was a PO install. And never thought anything more about them. Both these 78 Royales are the same at the front. I need someone to open the door that's right in front of the water heater. About 3 inches back from the door you opened, and to the left is a tube that the wires come out of. The gray wires that I think go to the water heater, and frig should be there to trace. I'm going to install a bigger 12 v fuse panel. If I'm correct about use. I'm going to run these wire to my larger fuse panel.Bob Dunahugh

The two light blue/gray 12 gauge wires that come from near the VIN plate run the frig, and water heater. Or at least by the powers of elimination. I removed, and cleaned every inch of 12 volt coach wiring from front to back. Then documented the colors of the 15 wires that go just to the 2 holding tanks, and freshwater. Then all the wires to the water pump, LP tank, water heater, furnace/thermostat, exhaust fans, frig, and lights. Then made the sets of wires to each item into harness bundles. Wires with mouse damage got fixed by soldering. Then I put marine shrink tubing on each joint. This involved a lot of time. Now I need some help. On the control panel. Just up, and behind the water tank switch. There is a brown wire that I have nothing to attach it too. There are 4 screws that hold the control panel in. This brown wire should be visible from the top. Remember. This only involves Coachmen completed GMC's. At this point. I'm thankful that I made the decision to dismantle, repair, and clean EVERYTHING. With linda in a wheelchair. As with the burned GMC. Failure has never been an option. The other 78 Royale took us over 46,000 miles in 13 years. From coast, to coast. With a trailer, or van in tow all the way. A GVW of up to 21,000 lbs. And NEVER left us at the side of the road. These GMC's are truly remarkable. Thank you to the people at General Motors.

Why would there be 12V wiring to the water heater?

I'm pretty sure it's to power the electric ignition and "fail" light hinder the cabinet. I know at least my royale has a switch that you flip to light it under the sink. If it fails to ignite a red light comes on indicating failure.

As to the question of why the 12v to the water heater. The water heater needs 12v to run the circuit board that controls the burner. Bob Dunahugh Member GMCMI78 Royale.

All the Royale coaches that I have encountered in the 77-78 era have had
Atwood propane water heaters.

And they also had a 120v. electric heating coil built into it.
