Hey Guy,
Getting started a little early on waking up SugarPie from her winters sleep. I was wondering what you all did for a transmission service? I am in KC Mo and don't have any GMC specialist around me. I do have a GMC trucking center near by. Would I take to them to service it or should I try a Transmission shop?
Thanks,
Tom

Tom,
If all you are planning to do to it is a fluid and filter change, and you don't want to do it yourself, any competent mechanic should be able to handle that. Be aware that a certain amount of black residue is common in the bottom of the pan and don't let them try to tell you you need a rebuild because of that.
If the fluid is a nice cherry red and clean and it doesn't smell burnt, it may be OK. I change mine out at about 12,000 mile intervals just because I do a lot of towing and live in the West where I am constantly going up and down grades.

Jim,
It's been maybe 8-10 years ago. I had the filter and fluid changed. I've maybe put 6k on it since. All I'm interested is doing the same filter and fluid change service done on it, no major problems on the transmission.

Make sure the filter tube fits snugly in the trans. There's been a bunch
of posts on here about out of tolerance filters causing transmission
mysteries.

If your filter is only 6k old, I would not change it. You have an older USA filter most likely better than any new filter and associated trans damage. If the fluid is clear red on the stick, I would skip the whole process. You can wipe it and dip it in a qt of Dexron and if it looks the same leave it.
