Back in November, I needed touchscreen for my GMC monitor consolidation project in order to easily toggle between apps. I also needed true multi-processing so that an app wouldn't be suspended when it wasn't in the active window. I was going to use one of my Lenovos, but I happened across this hybrid tablet with decent specs for $200. I truly expected it to be crapware like most of the low-end tablets. I mean, I had *just* paid $130 for W10 to upgrade an old Toughbook. How could anybody be selling a decent hybrid with W10 for only $70 more?

So far, this thing performs surprisingly well. Not snappy, but about your average 2yr-old-laptop speed. It will run Delorme/gps dongle and a wireless Gopro knockoff as a rearview cam. It will also run Sketchup (I'm still using v8). It serves as my laptop when it's not on the dash. It also runs a split-screen multi-usbcam (up to 4 cams) security program which I hope to use for sideview. When home, it has been an Ipad killer --that'll now be sacrificed to the grandkids when visiting.

It performed well enough that my wife wanted one for managing her business while traveling. She also likes to watch TV occasionally, so I bought this tuner and loaded it on hers. I paired it with the now-popular King Jack antenna. Works, with a few minor annoyances with the remote (probably config settings, haven't dug that deeply). Seems to work fine with a mouse.

It is very close in size to an Ipad2 with a flap cover. This iClever cover folds, origami-like, to make a pretty good kickstand. The keyboard and glidepad are in the lower flap. I use usb trackballs, hate glidepads.

I dislike the DC pin charging port and the wall wart charger but have found a usb cable with the DC pin end so I can use my usual travel charger.

I suspect that, like the Rpi, this is mostly sourced from smartphone parts. As such, I think the internal usb bus might be a weakness, so I'm using a powered hub for external disk drives, etc.

Since it's all usb-powered, I can power it & hub from the dash 12v outlet with this

RC,

Nice unit!

Unfortunately currently I have over 32GB of data on my desktop so that rules this unit out.

Bugger!

For the price, yes. And cheap enough that if it were lost or stolen, I'd survive.

>32G

It does have a micro sd slot as well as the main drive. I have a 64g card in that.

Those MicroSD slots are great. But most people that have an fruity
product as their main communication device, don't even know what they
are missing :*)

Because of storage limitations, these devices may not do as a desktop replacement, but they really do serve the purpose as a specific use device. During Cyber Monday, from WalMart, I picked up a Nextbook 8.9 inch tablet with keyboard and Win10 to use in the coach. I paid less than $100.00 thinking I wouldn't lose much if it was junk. Turns out to be great and I tend to use it for much of my casual internet browsing and email. I have my efi EBL interfaced to it and to my surprise was able to load and get an old version of Street and Trips running. I see they have his model for $109.00 ( http://www.walmart.com/ip/Nextbook-Flexx-8.9-2-in-1-Tablet-32GB-Intel-Quad-Core-Windows-10/46664254 ) and for $20 more you can get the 10.1 inch version. In the coach, I have an USB hub attached to the mini USB and to that the USB to Serial adapter for EBL, the GPS for S & T, plus a thumb drive for additional storage (which I haven't needed much of the time). Win10 works great now that the early round of updates are available. I detach the keyboard and use the Nextbook in tablet mode most of the time. Very small learning curve for Win10 over Win7 and once I got familiar with the interface, find it much more intuitive and easy to use. The Nextbook has the pin power cord.

I did work with someone who had one of these inexpensive tablets that had a mini usb port that also was the charge port. We worked at trying to get EBL with the serial USB adapter connected but did not have success. He had been told at Best Buy that the minu USB could be split and support charging while also supporting USB devices. Maybe we did not contort our face properly to get it to work...

You probably could construct a miniUSB plug that would allow both charging and serial data usage at the same time. You would have to build a hydra cable with the miniUSB (computer end), then split the cable (very tiny wires) and bring out the power lines to another connector of your choice. Bring out the data lines to a different connector. Think in terms of a "Y" configuration.
But, those wires in the typical cable are very tiny and fragile.

I've had many MicroSD cards fail, they appear to be very sensitive to static!

And I've got more computing devices than I can easily count - but I don't recall ever missing an SD slot on the "fruity products" that I own...
