I never understood why people dont vote......if nothing else there is always the lessor of two evils.....
As a recent citizen, I must say the election system here is utterly bizarre......

We all need to take part even if it seems fruitless.

There ARE several valid reasons for not voting.
One says don't vote because it only encourages "THEM."
Another is rooted in religion that states one should never
participate in corruption.
And voting always includes the very definite possibility of
voting a scoundrel (or worse) into office.
And there is always the possibility (probability?) of not
being able to discern the truth about ANY candidate!

Even if it's a matter of choosing the least bad of a bunch of horrible
choices, we DO need to do that!
And I think that's where we are today.

With a system that punished the best among us when they attempt to run for office and effect change.
I know die hard party loyalists on both side to the the isle who are in utter disbelief that this is the best our nation of over 300,000,000 people can muster.

I agree, though voting for statewide office in AL is kind of pointless. Voting in the Republican primary for statewide office matters, but after that it is essentially pointless.
Can I just say how much I really hate the electoral college and how much I wish we were more open to reviewing our Constitution on occasion? Something like every 12 years, in a Presidential election cycle, we allow a 60% majority of voters to be able to pass Constitutional Amendments, one proposed by each political party with more than 30% representation in either House of Congress.
Yes, that is still a slow process, as amending the Constitution should be, but it would generally allow both parties to put forward one idea 8 times per century. The idea would have to be passed by more than a majority of voters, so obviously nothing that appeals strongly to either extreme wing would survive. But I sure bet we could get a whole lot of middle of the road common sense things that offend both wings into our government charter.

G'day,
In Australia you can get fined if you don't vote!
http://www.aec.gov.au/elections/australian_electoral_system/electoral_procedures/Electoral_Offences.htm
To answer your next question if you wish to abstain you:
1) Go to the polling place
2) Give your name to the election officials
3) They mark that you have voted on the electoral roster
4) They hand you a ballot
5) You go into the polling booth
6) You fold up the ballot without marking any choices
7) You walk out of the polling booth and put the blank ballot in the ballot box

Rob M.

Rob, We have the opposite problem here. There are people that vote 3, 4, or 5 times in every election. Even the dead vote here.
You know the Chicago motto: Vote early and vote often. One year They were handing out stickers at the polls that said "I voted"
I took 5 of them and wore them on my hat for days. No one every asked why I had so many.
The state (Indiana) passed a law saying that you had to show a picture ID to vote. It was appealed all the way to the Supreme Court.
So if you like to vote, come to Chicago, Illinois.

It would be funny, if it wasn't so sad, that some people actually believe that to be the case.
Its just another, more subtle, version of Jim Crow and some Republicans have even admitted as much....
http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2013/10/25/2835101/gop-asks-party-official-resign-admits-voter-suppresses-democratic-votes/
But we should end this thread.....definitely off topic.
