I am executor for an estate that includes two GMCs and I'm trying to
decide how to dispose of them. They are both in poor cosmetic condition
though one is reputed to be nearly drivable.

I plan to take some photos and post them on my Google+ page.
Here is an example URL:
https://plus.google.com/102434734002949174273/posts/RhazWavsWDZ
Is that going to be generally accessible to those on this list?
If someone will direct me to the location of the VIN, I'll be sure to
get photos of those.

Are there businesses that specialize in refurbishing GMCs?

The location is central Texas.

All suggestions welcome!

Dale, to give you an idea of the bottom end pricing, even known-to-be-sound, road-worthy coaches are selling for only $8000 now. Non-drivers are going for as low as $300. Some, you can't even give away or have scrapped as the junkyards won't take them (though I'd bet that won't be a problem in central TX).

VIN starts with letters "TZE" --there should be a plate riveted on the passenger-side firewall straight ahead when you open the hatch.

About half our members read this via email, but I think Google+ is a good option for just about anyone with a browser.

Pictures! Lots of pictures! Inside and out.

As an executor, I'm not sure how I'd value rough-ish GMCs on the initial inventory --probably $1000 each.

Ebay might help with the your due diligence --but they tend to be over-priced and most often do not actually sell. Craigslist has more action.

Yes, there are several GMC restoration businesses but a restoration can take years and will end up costing the estate much more than the improved coach will sell for.

Dale, do please share the V.I.N.s off the coaches to John Shotwell so they get into the Registry.. or updated if they're already there. You can do so by posting them here if you aren't able to email them.

Dale,

An option not mentioned above is the recent addition to FaceBook of a group GMC Motorhome Marketplace. I believe that anybody can post to this, but the posting should link to an FB album that really needs to contain at least a dozen pictures. There is WAY too much that matters for an uniformed person to deal with. We are a helping and supportive community and I am sure that someone local will come alone to guide you.

What Matt said. Central TX is a fairly decent location for GMC recovery, some regional and some from surrounding states.

Those are about the saddest looking GMC's I've ever seen, aside from those
that rolled or burned. Didn't Walt have a 3rd GMC? Those don't look like
the one he actually used -- though it's been several years since we visited
him. I'd guess you'll be lucky to get a junk yard to accept those two --
especially if they have to come get them.

JMHO.

Some great parts on those coaches that should be saved before they are
scrapped - if that is where they are headed. Bumpers, propane/generator
doors, GMC ladder and roof "Rack", awning, front a - arms for just a
quick example.

Dale, Your best bet would find a pull a part junk yard to receive the carcasses. Get them to the disposal site. Then invite the Central Texas group to disassemble and purchase those parts that are useful. I was recently involved in such a task in Florida. I believe that this coach resulted in the junk yard gaining about $1000. This was a coach without an engine or transmission. This would help you get the best return for the estate and save other GMCs.

Thank you all for the guidance!

I'll have to first check with the beneficiary but I expect I'll be
parting them out at the Elroy location for the next six months or so. A
"pull your part" kind of deal. Once the decision is made, I'll try to
post to the facebook page also.

Please reply off list with offers and/or questions. Setting up
inspections should be easy and convenient. wmmtexas at gmail dot com

I first thought the generators might be attractive to me personally as
"grid down" back up. My perception is that the propane generators are
relatively long lived and trouble free. That is, the generators are
likely to be close to running. Can anyone confirm or deny? I then
realized that the generators are almost certainly 120vac and therefore
not well suited as back up power. Can anyone confirm that they are
120vac? Is it possible/reasonable to convert them to 240vac?

The first vehicle photographed was the one I thought was "close to
running". It didn't come out well in the photos but the transmission is
out. At least the flywheel is visible at the rear of the engine. The
second vehicle seems to have the drive train in place.

Dale,

The Onan's in GMC motorhomes are gasoline fueled, NOT propane. They are
also 120 vac ONLY. Very difficult to convert to 240 vac -- "not worth it"
difficult. But that doesn't mean they're not suitable for emergency backup
use -- what in your home uses 240 vac besides the electric stove, which you
can probably do without easily in an emergency?

Glad to hear you're going to part them out so they're not lost to the
"cult". Fortunately, I don't expect to need anything, but many will.

I'm not surprised at the transmission being out -- Walt was notoriously
hard on them with his penchant for hauling heavy car trailers all over the
country.

Due to mail volume, I have turned off maillist mail delivery. Y'all
have quite an active community! Not to mention knowledgeable and
helpful. Under slightly different circumstances, I would be highly
tempted to become a GMCer. I am monitoring the thread on the forum
though I've failed to join the forum. So, email addresses are not
conveniently available to me.

Most of the non-GMC photos are of vehicles not owned by the estate. Some
seem to be abandoned and may be sold under mechanics liens. It seems
fairly likely that that is what will happen to the Mini and fairly
unlikely to happen to the Itasca. I think the Itasca is 4WD but I
haven't looked closely.

Thanks for the information on the Onan. I'm astonished that GMC would
fuel it with very troublesome gasoline when a propane tank is very
near. For "grid down" power, a 120vac generator could easily supply
only half the possible loads in a house. One attraction to a 240vac
generator is that it might be used to spoof grid-tie inverters and
thereby make PV power available.
