The 'boss' wants a screen door so I'm in search mode trying to determine the best one out there. At this point I'd love some input on the best ones out there. I realize there isn't a huge selection of doors available new but wondered if there is a consensus on the best door built for our coaches.
Thanks for any input.

If you don't find one for the GMC, zhagrieb came up with a DIY solution:

Once I got the Birch screen door correctly installed I wouldn't trade it for anything. Of course it took over two years to get it to fit correctly...

Hal,

I guess after seeing ours, she made up her mind that she has to have one. You saw mine at Quartzsite. It (Ragusa) works pretty well with the exception of the plastic inserts not fitting or sliding perfectly. I think it is the only option for a screen door that is curved and hinged to fit unless you can find a used Birch. I found the Ragusa to be a little hard to get to fit right and had to trim the weather strip to make it close easily, but once you get the adjustments out of the way, it is a good door.

It is kind of a hassle to go in and out of a lot, like when you're grilling outside and need to make frequent trips into the coach, but I'm guessing that would be true of any screen door.

We have the Ragusa Screen Door. A nice heavy duty door, however....while it took only 45 minutes to install, it took two days to adjust. I talked to a tech at Ragusa. He said that sometimes the door fits perfect the first fitting, sometimes it takes a lot of time to work the bugs out. He said it is impossible to build a door that will work right the first time in every coach. The coaches are 30- 40 yrs old. Each has sagged or changed dimension differently depending on owner use and many other variables. So they build one that will fit the middle ground of applications, and hope you don't have trouble with the install. A nice door, but plan for some initial adjusting time. Just what I've experienced.

Wondering if anybody who has a flexsteel dinnette right by the door has installed an alternative screen door?
Wondering if there is clearance when dinette is folded down into bed. (As it is folded). Nor if you have to have the curve of the birch or ragusa.

Other question if jimk is paying attention he has mentioned in the past he was working with somone on another screen door option? Any progress?

I have installed several Ragusa screen doors. When they fit, they fit well
enough. I also have had one beat my ass into submission. Two whole days
worth. I put it back in the shipping box and told the customer I give up.
No charge. The problem was not the Ragusa door. It was the GMC COACH. The
shape had changed so that the heads of the coach door bolts would bind
against the screen door hinges, making the door difficult to close. Bob
Burkitt, I believe, still owns the fixtures for the original Birch screen
doors. That is the gold anodized aluminum door you most often see. Their
hinges are thinner and do not interfere with the coach door. If you can
find a used one, that is the way I would go. Your experience absolutely
will vary.

You about it hit on the head Carl. Blanca has asked for a door ever since seeing one. Looking at yours' just reminded her.
We have a J couch to the right of the door and a straight door really won't work well for us. Thanks Jim, I'd thought the Birch might be the best fit if one could be found but really wanted other opinions from those with actual experience. Finding a door and then parts could be a challenge although I 'think' I might know where one resides.
Hope you're feeling better Jim.
Thanks all,Hal

Hal,

Don't be surprised, even if you find a Birch door, at how difficult it can
be to make it fit. Since I bought the GMC expressly for the trip to
Alaska, where I'd experienced the mosquitos a couple of times before, I was
determined to have a screen door. Someone came through for me and I drove
150 miles to get it. After a solid week of my life wasted, I could close
the entry door with only one small boy to help me!

As soon as we got back from Alaska (where we had NO mosquito problem), I
removed and sold the door (to some poor soul who I don't think has spoken
to me since). We've still got the full-body mosquito nets I bought at
Cabela's on the way up -- also unused. :-)

For my part, the 1 day in the Spring and the 1 day in the Fall when I'd
likely leave the entry door open don't justify the hassle of a screen
door. Fortunately, SHE agrees with me. :-)

Good luck -- with your skills, the door will probably fit right off the bat!

Ken H.

I've had a Ragusa screen door for 3 or 4 years now, still not installed. The hinges have the same problem Jim Hupy described.

If I recall, the hinge part formed to go through the door gap has a 45* bend when it actually needs more like two 90* bends on mine. The hinge piece is formed with some substantially thick steel for the job. A major press would be required to shape it. Hence the door is still in the box.

Jim Hupy is right about the shape of the coaches. In the early eighties, I bought a Birch screen door and tried to put it on my coach. After much work, and a couple of phone conversations with Alex Birch, he told me "I have put on over 600 of these doors and I do not think any of the coaches have been the same". I gave up and sold the door to a friend, who put it on his coach with almost no trouble... it still fits fine today on that Royale.

We know the cheapest fix, and it has worked well for us. It might not be elegant, but it does work very well. Even the dog likes it because she can go in or out when she wants to do so (and the door closes behind her).

We got a "magnetic" door and put the fuzzy half of Velcro at the sides and top of the doorway. I did this with some trim mount tape. The hook part was stitched to the screen fabric. We cut the fabric length as it was long and then moved a magnet to the bottom. I had to add some extra at the center as the pull of the door opening as too much for a single pass of Velcro. We also had to put some gussets in at the top corners so it could accommodate the hangers for the Day/Night shade on the door.

What we really like the fact that the thing stores folded flat on a shelf and is out of the way when not wanted. In a 23 storage is precious. Total cost was about 30$us - 20 for the screen door (now 10 on Amazon and another 10 for the 1/2 Velcro.

As I put higher in this thread, I love my Birch door despite all the fiddling (and Bob Burkitt's in-person help for 2 days at Bean Station!) getting it to fit. However, if I was doing it again I think Matt Colie has the best solution. Cheap, customizable, and easily moved out of the way. That is a winning combination.

Nelson Wright has a sliding or rolled-up screen door installed on his rear bath Royale. It is housed on the aft side of the door and, IIRC, it was closer to the body than Jared's. I may be mistaken on that, though.
