Is there a way of pulling out the Onan tray further or some other way in order to access the circuit board? '73 23' Canyonlands 230 in Southern California. Thanks.

The tray should pull out far enough to easily a access the board. But, it may be very stiff generally do to lack of lub and usage. Try pulling hard.

To add, just because I forgot. If the starter bracket is broken, a common problem, the starter will drop down and hang on the frame. Reach under to the Onan starter and see if you can push the body of the starter up and or down. If it moves, the bracket is broken. JmK has Ragusa starter bracket that will permanently fix that problem. Shiny marks on the GMC frame, under the Onan, is another sure indicator that the bracket is broken.

I can't say for the early coaches, but the slides on my '78 are 'two
stage'. But when I started building up my courage to service and work on
it, only one stage was working.

It took a some Silikroil to get it loosened up enough that it would pull
all the way out. I don't think it had been extended all the way since '96.

machanic,
You have discovered one of the those big differences in short/early coaches that I often note. The slides on a BF are about long enough for general maintenance only.

It is possible to get at the control board with the unit pulled out if you get a 5/16s open end to loosen (not remove) the clamping screw on the back side. Once you do that (and the front as well) the cover can be pulled off.

Be very careful with the fason connections, the solder is often fatigue cracked.

If you decide to remove the unit from the coach, be sure to download the manual X7425 and read the instructions for the BF (4kW) as the instructions for the NH (6kW) will get you into a situation that is difficult to recover.

Hello all - Happy Canada Day or July 4th weekend for those of you south of the border Wink

Resurrecting this thread a bit since I couldn't find another that came close. I have recently retrieved my '77 403 from WA state and now that the dust has settled at work, I am getting the not functioning bits going. The Onan will turn over from the remote switch, but not catch. I would love to be able to work on the problem with my neighbour, but can't get the tray to budge in order to check anything out - possible that is why the PO wasn't able to get it running when it quit. How much "OO-OMPH" is required to move it before we bust it? I am thinking better to try some lube in the tracks before I go too far. FYI, The 2 front latches are opening & closing properly, but the release lever on the top right does not close all the way so I suspect it may have been that way for a while and it may have shifted out of line just a wee.

Suggestions? Best type of lube to try that won't cause any damage? (or blow up in my face!) Smile
