So live in the home city of O'Reilly Automotive. That and $6 will still not get me some Mobil 1 ATF. Larry Moe and Curly at least have space on their shelf for it (empty of course....I hate Pep Boys)...Walmart, no...Autozone, no. Man what is with this stuff? (I wonder if Randy Van Winkle uses this, I am about 14 minutes from his house....hmmm.....black sweater, turtle neck, watch cap, blackened under the eyes.....flashlight.....piece of steak for the Doberman......bolt cutter.....hmmmmmmm).
I guess I am going to have to get it from Amazon...

It is hard to find in California, as well. Last time I had to do some tranny work I ended up trying several stores in the area. I will say if $6 will get you some, get lots. It is $10 here. Get several cases and the next time I visit Randy I can get a black turtle neck...
I am a big believer in Amazon Prime. I know it costs $99 but I get that back in just a few orders of two day free deliveries. Getting ready for our fall trip, UPS and FedEx were tripping over each other.

I could need correcting here, but, I thought that all Dexron by definition was synthetic. Why not just run Dexron and do the drain interval as recommended?

No, all Dexron is not synthetic.
It is available via Amazon, ~$56/case of 6
Not sure it is really of that much benefit except for extreamly HD use where the temps are much higher where the synthetics don't break down as fast.
The purported increased lubricity may not be a good thing for the worn plates in our trannys.
I have used Type F fluid for years in my older high performence GMs as it shifts harder. [Not in the newer OD units though] But I wouldn't in the GMC. Anything that shifts too hard in a 12000# vehicle would probably break parts.

When I was at Ford Motor Corp, we learned that the different fluids had
what they referred to as Friction Modifiers.
That was for the plates and apparently that was the main difference .

While it may not be necessary, I have been running Mobil-1 fluid in my transmission for the last few service intervals. My transmission is original with (now) 94,000+ miles on it, I tow almost everywhere I go, and I live in the West, driving in pretty extreme conditions. Even though I have been changing the transmission fluid and filter ~ every 12,000 miles, I figure Mobil one fluid is a lot cheaper than a new transmission.
Back in September, I needed some fluid due to a pan gasket leak and I found some at O'Reilly's even in Moab Utah. It was not out on display, but they had some in the back room.

On Saturday, when I first posted about this issue, I had concluded that I was not going to easily acquire Mobil 1 ATF in Springfield, MO, population 160,000, and hometown of Oreilly's. I found it on Amazon and ordered a case for $55 for 6 quarts, free shipping on Prime. On Sunday, I bought a front caliper for my Samurai and mentioned to the Oreilly guy that it appeared that Oreilly was leaning hard into their own house brands relating to ATF. He said "it is in our warehouse" and instructed me to call on Monday to order it to that store. Well, I forgot to do that on Monday morning, but was reminded of the issue when the Amazon shipment arrived at about 9am on a Federal holiday. Are you kidding me?
Amazon just might be the end of local commerce. My wife grew up in a small town with Mom and Pop stores. However when Walmart moved into an adjacent town, the Mom and Pops went out of business. They could not compete on selection, price, availability, etc. I remember when my Mom tore an order form out of the Sears and Roebuck catalog, filled it in, then mailed it to Chicago, then waited for them to fulfill the order, then waited for the mail to bring whatever it was. Different times.
Pep Boys has not had this stuff for several weeks but they do carry it. Do the locals care that they have empty shelves for this product? Customer service? Not so much.

If you only change 6 quarts, there will still be quite a bit of conventional Dexron mixed in there with the new stuff. I don't know if that negates the advantages of the Synth as the Dino molecules will still break down at some lower temp forming the stiction or whatever compounds they form. I would only switch to Mobile 1 after a tear down or converter dump. Until then just slightly increase your Dexron fluid change interval and call it a day while you spend the extra money on dinner.

Yes Jim, 3.70 limited slip. I figure I'll get the percentage of Mobil One high enough eventually that I will get the desired benefit out of it. Anyway, It is worth it to me to run the best lubricants I can.
