[GMCnet] GMC Fire [message #293730] Mon, 11 January 2016 15:48 Go to next message
Anonymous   United States
I don’t really know how to put the link in of the conversation string but am very interested in Bob’s issues, fire insurance coverage, and fire prevention information for all we GMCers. I am a true NEWBIE (just acquired our ’76 23’ Birchaven VIN TZE336V100703 the end of September. I’m listed as vpearce. The following is what I copied from GMC Digest, Vol 90, Issue 35

CADg-sf-heR2ycHS6bW4VR9pPpfO5qpac_mZohGEL5iMskPT_jA@mail.gmail.com
GMC fire data from Bob Dunahugh yenko108@hotmail.co

I am very concerned about fire safety on these Classic’s as I have noticed on the average at least one rig (not GMCs) fire per trip (live in Lake Oswego, OR) when doing my fishing and photography jaunts every weekend/month.

The first safety upgrade is to install foam extinguishers I am getting from Jim Bounds (I cc’d him on this if you need his email address) since the foam is not corrosive and is ‘green’ in the engine and refrigerator compartments - seems that is the area where most fires begin. From reading the data about your fire, Bob - it began in the refrigerator area - is that correct? Certainly glad you got full coverage with all your upgrades, etc. I have Progessive presently, but what you stated, I better change to State Farm - or what would give me coverage for all the upgrading I will be doing later to my Birchaven (quad-bags, brake system - still keep drum brakes on rear (since I don’t want to have original equipment changes on brakes), Onan 4KW upgrade, re-wire electrical to heavy duty (anyone have wiring diagrams (or location of diagrams) for ’76 Transmode 23’ and newer inverter and converters), solar, interior flooring (cork and/or bamboo) and birch plywood cabinets, RAMCO power mirrors, and catalytic furnace for starters. Phew - will be very busy.

There is a CB (don’t know the brand, but it works) with side antenna on the Aluminum Falcon will keep it along having a GPS, iPhone, and iPad - and all the apps - waze for Apple. Am looking at the various maps about the mountain grades, etc for the downgrade surprises. That will give me more information about the roads in the West.

For the most part, is very enjoyable to read the ‘traffic’ on the GMC net. Keep up the good chatter - there are gems each day for we Newbies.

Thank you,

Virgil

I've a 23' rear bath Norris upfit, not a lot different from yours. I put the floated backing plate conversion (torque arm or somesuch) and I ain't going back. The dam' thing will STOP, whereas before it would slow down and eventually quit, or it would flat spot tires and sort of stop. Someone was concerned about liability issues, my approach is, I'd rather stop the thing before it hits and there's no liability concern at all.
Now you may say, "I drive carefully and always leave stopping room," and this is probably true - certainly it is for me. However, I topped a rise at 40 in a 50 zone East of Lake Louisa State Park in Florida, only to find a copcar across the travel lanes so no one would drive down to where the life flight helicopter was landing to remove the combatants of a messy wreck across the fourlane. I got it stopped - with stock brakes - without having to tuck it in the median or the ditch, or t-boning the cop. I took a quarter inch patch off both back tires doing it, and shook my teeth out all the way home as a result. And then bought and installed the brake upgrade. I suggest you seriously consider it.

Virgil,

Here's a link to a document I put together with input from everybody on the GMCnet:

http://www.gmceast.com/technical/Mueller_GMCer-Fire-Guide.pdf

It follows the old adage "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."

I have a ditto for Johnny's story. Only a little different but the same result.
