When I assembled my spare 455 engine last year I used a standard FelPro gasket set which included a cork oil pan gasket. A few months ago I bought some gaskets from Rock Auto that were on clearance, one being a FelPro OS30471C fiber oil pan gasket set.
Questions: Has anybody used the fiber oil pan gasket on their GMC engine? In theory the fiber gasket should be more durable and leak-free over time than the cork one. In practice, is it really better? Since the engine is on an engine stand in the garage it's easy to install the fiber gasket. If you were me, would you change out the cork gasket for the fiber one?

Bob,
Bob Drewes told me to use a 350 diesel oil pan seal it is a sandwich with a metal center that will not creep out.
Auto-Zone shows Fel-Pro oil pan gasket # OS30471C as standard for the 350 diesel and is shown as optional for the 455 and 403.
I installed one when I replaced the OEM Olds oil pan with one with a second drain in it back in 2008 and it's still leak tight.
If I were you I'd change it and add a second drain.

Bob,
A good (Fel-Pro was good - I don't know now) cork gasket is just fine. Both that and a fiber will preform equally well if installed without over crushing it at the fasteners. If it was glued to one side or the other and only one side, it will not tear or extrude. If you did a careful job of putting in the cork part, I sure wouldn't bother taking it out just to replace it with fiber.
Why did manufactures go away from cork/composite?
Cost.

Is this piece of information making it to the GMCMI Parts Interchange Index?
In the Spring 2015 version it is Not listed.
Who is really doing the work to keep the interchange up to date?
I also see in the Parts Book GMC,78Z Parts Book..... 384472
Is it still possible to cross reference a part using the GMC numbers??
Around 20 years ago I was looking for a part and went to my local GMC
dealer with part number in hand...when they finished laughing , they
started chasing the numbers and changes over the years, which resulted in a
big fat Nothing...Why are those numbers still posted?

Mike, I think there is still value for having the original GM P/N. It can be hit or miss whether it will work and some sites are better than others when it comes to finding a comparable part. Also, many coach parts were used on other GM models and smany of those are still available today. Ebay and Craigs list may also show vintage parts under the original number.

I have seen where people sit the newly done engine on the oil pan and thus
the gasket will get compressed and will leak later.

Thank you so much for the Fel-Pro oil pan gasket # OS30471C. Currently, in
the printed version of the 2015 Parts Interchange Index on page 21 (second
column, first item) we have the following listed.
Gasket, Oil Pan Set
GMC 78Z Parts Book: 384472
Detroit: 16314
Fel Pro: OS13419C
And now in the electronic version and soon to be produced printed version,
the Fel Pro: OS30471C part number! Again, thank you!
Just a little bit about the Index: The GMCMH Parts Interchange Index was
originated by the founder of GMC Motorhomes International, Ralph Luby.
During the years of 2004 thru 2008 Emery Stora maintained and reorganized
the entire Index to correlate with the 78Z Parts Book. What an undertaking!
During the years of 2009 thru 2014 Billy Massey continued the maintenance
of the Index. Since taking on this responsibility, GMCMI has continued to
maintain and produce a printed version as well as launching an electronic
version in October of 2015. We currently are working on additional features
to enhance the electronic version and will announce them when they are
thoroughly tested and available.
But no matter how much work we put into the organization and implementation
of the Index, WE NEED YOU! When you come across an incorrect number or a
new number/source, please do share it! Email that information to
kimweeksgmc@gmail.com or admin@gmail.com.
News Flash: I am pleased to say, that at the Fall Convention in Rapid City,
Mark Elmer approached me and asked if I would like to have him to review
and update the NAPA numbers in the Parts Interchange! Wow, would I! Mark is
currently working on those updates and they will be included in the 2016
version of the printed Index and in the electronic version. Thank you,
Mark! (p.s. I was informed by Emery Stora that this is not the first time
that he has done this for the GMC Community! What a guy!)

Indeed, Mark Elmer has been an asset to the parts interchange for many years. With his position at NAPA, he has always been very
helpful with their part number updates.
