Fay,
I did a bit of research and it looks like the eclipse will be visible on the west coast on August 21, 2017.
http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEgoogle/SEgoogle2001/SE2017Aug21Tgoogle.html
If you click on Satellite view and enlarge it you will see that Jim Hupy is going to have a front row seat!
How about we plan an Alaska tour so that the return trip coincides with the timing of the eclipse and we descend on Jim's and Judy's
home en masse August 20, 2017! VBG :->
BTW the blurb below the map states:
"This interactive Google map shows the path of the Total Solar Eclipse of 2017 Aug 21. The northern and southern path limits are
blue and the central line is red. You MUST be somewhere within the central path (between the blue lines) to see the total phase of
the eclipse. The eclipse is longest on the central line (red). The yellow lines crossing the path indicate the time and position of
maximum eclipse at 10-minute intervals."

Rob,
Woudn't mind waiting till next year, but the summer of 2017 is when the
next total solar eclipse visible on the west coast is going to happen. Been
waiting a long time to see one of those, so don't want to miss this one!
And I am afraid of what the cost of gas might be if I wait until 2018.
However, I still have to replace the trani I roasted and check the rear
brakes, so maybe this year might not happen.

That's just up the street from me (about ~~60 miles) past Anderson SC on I 85. I wonder if there's someplace close by to have an 'overnight rally for the eclipse' and hope for clear weather.

I've had this on my mind a few years. I think it's in the morning, clouds
trend to be in the mountains not the valleys at that time of year, so right
on I5 should be good.
Burning Man should start a week later.

A number of years ago there was a total solar eclipse along nearly the same
path. Western Oregon was socked in, but eastern Oregon wasn't. I loaded up
the family and we drove to the Hermiston area. I can see why they place
such a significant amount of weirdness to eclipses. It is an eerie
sensation to see one in its entirety. Animals and birds behave strangely.
Hell, humans do too. If you are serious about dropping in, I can
accommodate 5 or 6 coaches. But, no tie dyed, long haired, pot smokers
allowed. This is red neck country. (Grin) Bourbon and beer is ok however.

Many years ago my daughter Heather and I wanted to watch the eclipse. When the clouds moved in we decided to watch it from the air. I filed IFR and we went on top to watch it. I also flew to the center of the eclipse area. When I told ATC what we were doing ATC had no problems with us just hanging around for a while up there. I actually filed an IFR flight plan taking off and arriving at the same airport with an estimated 4 hours en route.

Rob,
That might work - would be fun to have you on the Alaska run too. But was
kind of planning on watching the eclipse further east, over by John Day
area as wanted to spend time over there again. Perhaps we just might move
the group that way?
