Mark Quasius, F333630 has an article in FMCA"s Jan. 2016 Family Motor Coaching
magazine (p.62 ). Thought some might find it interesting. Mac and Ada will
be at the Quartzite, AZ travel and RV show in a few weeks.

Lots of other good stuff in that January issue too: Some good articles
about GA attractions; a good description of FMCA membership benefits,
including clip-out cards to carry in case you need to use the medical
assistance benefits; lists of FMCA chapters; a list of folks sort of like
our Black List; and a limited information campgrounds guide. It's a "take
along" rather than the usual "throw away" edition.

Speaking of Quartzsite, Kathy and I will be spending a few nights there in the middle of the big RV show (Tue and Wed, 1/19-20) and I was wondering if any other GMCers will be there then. I noticed the CA clubs are having a (joint?) rally the previous weekend in Lake Havasu at the balloon festival. Are any of you planning to take in the Q action afterwards? Our plan is to do my birthday trip to Anza Borrego Desert State Park, west of the Salton sea, head from there to Quartzsite, and finish off the trip at the Saguaro Jetset rally at the Casa Grande (AZ) Bluegrass festival (1/21-24).

Sounds like a cool trip.

Did you ever get the back up camera situation resolved?

Yes, I did. They sent me a replacement camera the day before our last little trip. I just installed it last weekend (after testing it) and it seems to work fine. Hopefully I won't have any further issues.

We plan on being there after the FMCA Indio Rally the 6th through 10th. Plan on 3 or 4 weeks in Quartzsite anyway. It's been a yearly event for us for 25 years.

Gene, FMCA's mag is also online. The article is a good read. Only has
one flaw. States that halon extinguishers were banned. The production of
halon gas was banned. Fire Fight is now using what is known as a GREEN GAS in the
place of halon which is getting quite expensive and hard to find (even though
FFP is grandfathered to use it).

Bought all the Fire Fight equipment for under $1,000 and installed it myself in less than a couple of hours. If you have seen the results of a fire put out with a powdered extinguisher and all its destroyed corroded stuff, including wiring, you would change to.

I got one of Jim Bounds fire bottle set ups and when I was installing it I
accidently hooked the lever on the edge of the hatch and unloaded the whole
bottle inside the coach. His stuff is a water based kind of soapy liquid
which was great because I was able to wash the front cap and the dash with
it. Jim was kind enough to re-fill the bottle no charge for me. I did end up
installing the bottle behind the front drivers seat with the stainless line
going through the floor to the "sprayer" mounted on the left lip of the
hatch close to the alternator.

A friend of a friend had an electrical panel explosion and fire in a UHF plant. On site guy put it out with powder extinguishers. They wrote off a six month old half million dollar UHF transmitter as scrap. Inshoance company demanded - and got - a Halon system for the replacement. We had Halon in the studios here some years back, it was the only way the fire inspector allowed us to remove the sprinkler system in the studio area. One of the jocks managed to set it off one night. Scared hell out of her, but did no damage beyond blowing the drop ceiling tiles all over. Now you can't get Halon anymore, dunno what I'd do on a new build.

johnny, halon systems are available using existing stock , but most manufacturers that used halon in the past have now switched to what is known as "GREEN GAS" in their systems. Only the production of new halon gas has been banned.

According to Wikipedia, green gas is a mixture of propane and other stuff. Not what I want to throw on a fire. Wiki notes, it's the propellant used in Airsoft guns.I expect what you're referring to is something entirely different.
From a practical point of view, we left the sprinklers in the last studio complex I built. The equipment is both substantially cheaper and more water resistant. At 100K 1984 dollars a room, the halon was justified. At 20K 2010 dollars it isn't. Plus less potential damage from wetting what's there.. it doesn't pay out. Halon is amazing stuff though. Fire simply doesn't work in a surprisingly low concentration. Also, being a heavy gas, it is the opposite of helium. Take a lungful and talk, and suddenly a pipsqueak sounds like Foghorn Leghorn. Fun stuff, albeit expensive.

I use to design and sell Halon systems for computer rooms. It works well in enclosed environments (Computer rooms, motor rooms, Electrical equipment rooms, etc.) It does not work well in areas open to air flow. As an example, we never used it for auxiliary generators located outside even though they were usually mounted inside cabinet enclosures. To use Halon in those environments we had to overdose the fire usually configuring 4 to 5 times the capacity normally required. I had one that the customer insisted that we use Halon, so we did. A few years later their insurance company refused to cover it with that system and specified AR-AFFF replacement. The AR was not necessary since it was diesel powered but they used it anyway. AR-AFFF is the only way to go on gasoline engines. Halon, if large enough, should work in the GMC propane refrigerator cabinets due to low air flow. I question it's use in the Onan cabinet because it is open on the bottom and air is blowing air through it while the Onan is running.

The studio s are sound tight and use separate A/C systems from the building systems... and do not use the overhead as a plenum. It's easy to isolate them, we were set for I believe 15% concentration, 6 or 7% being enough to stop a fire. The globes containing the stuff had to be mounted to building suport beams, they supposedly would act like rockets otherwise when the valve was opened. One casualty when it went off, the jockette punched the OFF button on the console so hard it shattered and fell inside the chassis.

The computer room stuff we outfitted had a 30 second delay with siren. You had 30 seconds to get out or shut it down. After that it shut down the ventilation system dumped the entire tank(s). We had one go off in a clients computer room. A week after that the smell got real bad. They eventually found dead rats under the false floor used in the computer room.

Amazing what's in there, isn't it!

Rats, munching on some leftover bus and tag?

The data center we used had a dump after the UV tube on the Leibert air handler decided to fail in spectacular fashion.
