Boxing Day is when the British "peeons" (misspelled purposly) get to celebrate Christmas after serving the Elite on Christmas Day.

I was told that it is the day when everyone boxes up all of their Christmas gifts and returns them to the stores for a refund.

It mostly stems from the boxes of gifts (not necessarily wraped) or food that would be given to the lower classes after Christmas (tradesmen labourers, servants, etc). (The british really embraced classisim)
Commonwealth countries follow the British tradition of a holiday on that day.
Being a holiday means that all kinds of things take place.
Canadian retailers have used this day to sell off or discount products to clear out christmas stock. But in the Last few years they have begun to embrace Black Friday as if it had some significance here. (It doesn't ) Maybe the American retailers will begin to embrace Boxing day. (Sounds like a money making proposition doesn't it?)
