Was messing with the 78 Royale Mouse House tonight. It hadn't occurred to me before that there's no air tank. It looks like a simple system to work on. This Royale is a latter 78 Royale then the other 2. So it must have been late in the production year? Has this system been dependable. And what's it's weak spot? Bob Dunahugh73 and 78 GMC's

Bob,
My 76 has the OEM DYNA single compressor and small air tank. My Son's 78 has the dual compressor with no air tank.
Both systems work fine, but the 78 2 compressor, brings the coach to ride height faster and is not as noisy as the Dyna compressor in the 76.
The air tank does provide a bit of reserve air so the compressor which reduces the number of times the compressor cycles on/off.
I think the weak spot on the 78 is parts availability... look after yours...

I have a '78 ElectroLevel II, and I wonder if there is a source for the
dryer (desiccant) modules.
I haven't gotten far enough into it to know if these are 'field
serviceable', but at 37 years, I would guess they no longer dry very much.

Read the manual. Good description of the drier/dessicants. They can be
replaced. Good luck finding new ones. I have some used ones you can play
with if you are interested in paying the freight to get them.

OOps. the disorganized way these messages come across the email system

I guess that there were still single compressors used in GM cars like the
Olds silhouette and similar other makes. I was kinda stuck on GMC's. Never
ceases to amaze me the depth of knowledge on the combined brains of this
net.

I have found that as the EL II compressors age, that their permanent
magnets lose strength. As a result, when the compressors have to work
against a large load ( 80+ psi.) that they slow down, yet their electrical
properties, ( resistance) still checks out ok. Only fix that I know
for that is to replace them. The newer GM compressors as used in the Olds
Sillouette, and the Pontiac version of it, seem to have the rare earth
magnets in their motors. They are much quicker at high loads than the EL II
compressors are. They will interchange. AFAIK, they may still may be
available NOS.

Oh, I haven't even gotten to the sensors, but I don't think they are wired
up correctly or they don't work. When I flip the switch to auto, nothing
happens.
Jim Hupy, good advice on the older generation motors. These do not seem
very 'fast' compared to my EL 1 with a rebuilt compressor. But they are
quiet. You've given me several options to track down and consider.

These things were used on millions of GM vehicles and you can find good usable ones in the pick and pulls. The sensors are still out there on high end GM cars into the 80's. The more recent ones with the flat connectors will work but require rewiring. Unfortunately, most of the cars of this vintage east of the Mississippi have been ground up. They are still plentiful in the west. I would also recommend that you upgrade the wiring as shown here (this will really speed up the compressor):

BTW, search for these p/n's and find the latest versions of these compressors. Rock Auto and Amazon carry them. 15147082, 15219513. I have one in my cabinet and other than the wiring connector, it is a straight replacement.

Sensors are still available but will require rewiring: P/N 89047637. Again Amazon and Rock auto have them and I'm sure all this will be on Ebay as well. I have found the EL II to be totally reliable. It's a system that GM settled on in 78 and kept well into the 80's
