For the forum, let me clarify that certain of these items are (or may
be) subject to copyrights, requiring releases and permitted uses of the
same, and will not be posted here.
Don contacted me 'off line' as a GMC II owner seeking more information, and
my reply spilled over.
Nothing to see here... Just some academic research and what not.
I'll add that if you haven't been to the RV hall of fame and museum in
Elkhart, IN, many of you would find that an interesting place to visit.

Mark,
Just a reminder for those who may not know: Changing the Subject line on
an email here accomplishes very little for most email users; the message
will remain in the thread where it was originally transmitted. That's
because the system utilizes a header entry which is unchangeable to link
messages together. To change the thread, a NEW message must be initiated.
An exception to that rule is for those utilizing GMail, which can be set to
thread on the Subject.

Ken Thanks. I do use Gmail on a personal domain.

Copyright is an interesting issue for the motor companies.
Ford releases MM's to the public domain when they take them out of print.
Does anyone know if GM does the same?

Emery,
Your email piqued my interest for minutia and so for the hell of it I just examined all three OEM manuals and Parts Book I have here
in Sydney and I found something vaguely interesting:
X-7525
Front Cover - No Copyright Information
Inside Cover - FOREWORD - No Copyright Information
Page Opposite Inside Cover - IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTICE - No Copyright Information
Next Page - Blank
Next Page - Section Index - No Copyright Information
Next Page - Blank
Next Page - Section 0 - General Information, Periodic Maintenance, and Lubrication - No Copyright Information
Last Page - Fold out wiring diagram
Inside Back Cover - No Copyright Information
Back Cover - No Copyright Information
X-7625
Front Cover - No Copyright Information
Inside Cover - INTRODUCTION - No Copyright Information
Page Opposite Inside Cover - IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTICE - No Copyright Information
Next Page - Blank
Next Page - Section Index - At the bottom of the page is the copyright symbol (letter C inside a circle) followed by General Motors
Corporation Printed in U.S.A.
X-7725
Front Cover - No Copyright Information
Inside Cover - FOREWORD - No Copyright Information
Page Opposite Inside Cover - IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTICE - No Copyright Information
Next Page - CAUTION - No Copyright Information
Next Page - Table of Contents - No Copyright Information
Next Page - Blank
Next Page - Section 0 - General Information, Periodic Maintenance, and Lubrication - No Copyright Information
Last Page - Fold out wiring diagram
Inside Back Cover - No Copyright Information
Back Cover - No Copyright Information
What struck me as strange was that X-7625 was copyrighted but X-7725 was not.
Parts Book 78Z Printed in May of 1979 does not have any copyright information.
While I agree that GM could prosecute someone for copyright infringement of these old GMC Motorhome publications in my OPINION the
risk of that happening is VERY SLIM TO NONE!

Several years ago Henry Davis, a GMCer with a lot of knowledge about copyrights and patents, told us that none of the GM Motorhome
manuals were copyrighted except the 1977-1978 Maintenance Manual X7725 because they did not include any copyright notices in them
which were a requirement of the copyright law at the time they were published. Even though the 1977-1978 manual is copyrighted
several sites on the Internet have pdf copies of it and they apparently have not had any pressure from GM to remove it.

Rob
I think that the confusion here is that the copyright law changed post 1976. Prior to that a company had to put copyright information in a document in order to be protected.
So anything published after 1976 did not need any copyright notice or symbol in the document and the publisher would still have copyright protection.
That is why Henry Davis told us on the GMCnet back in 2001 that X-7725 would still be copyrighted even though nothing is shown in the book about copyright, while all the earlier books did not have copyright protection.

I suspect GM has pretty much zero interest in enforcing a copyright on 30+ year old publications. They would gain nothing, and lose drastically via bad publicity. The concern I have is that one of the 'patent trolls' might somehow obtain the rights. It's a very minor concern, most GMCers aren't sufficiently well off to make it worthwhile as far as I can see - and proving a loss wouldn't be easy.

I doubt prosecution would get past the 'lawyer letter'. Unless you were selling the manuals, too much cost to go after someone and not enough recovery to make it worthwhile. One of the trolls is still making noises about broadcast storage and automation systems, but the Patent Office told him to pack sand and most of the broadcasters - my employers included - initially told him FOAD. I gather since I retired some accommodation has been made but I've no idea quite what.
