[GMCnet] Critters out of ALF [message #292361] Thu, 17 December 2015 10:06 Go to next message
Anonymous   United States
What works to keep mice and squirrels out of our GMC’s? I’ve seen ‘Irish Spring,’ etc and these sonic emitters. Does this work?

I am building a pad with electrical, water, compressed air pipe, black water dump, and getting a ‘shelter’ for protection. What sort of anti-vermin devices work.

btw - to view ALF - use vpearce for the photo.

I’ve thank you all for the recommendations for the engine block heater - when traveling to the cold areas - I want to have that plug already installed. Maybe there are heater’s for the exposed tanks that will prevent ice formation.

Thanks again for your sharing!

Glad you want to use your coach. When it is cold enough to need a block heater, it is a struggle to keep the inside of the coach warm. (below 15 degrees??) and usually I do not want to drive on the roads in that temps, due to ice, and salt. But that is just me, and the more you use your coach the better. I think you would be happy with the magnetic heater on the oil pan, and zip tie up the wire. Then it is ready to plug in.

Here is a link to some tank heaters for the underside "exposed" tanks:
http://www.ultraheat.com/rv_products.html

I would be very interested in hearing about what you decide to do, and how well it works for you.

From my observations, I think Mice are different all over the country. What works for one person, seems to have been foiled by another.

I always keep 2 mouse traps active in my coach. They are these type, so they are pretty easy to maintain, and not worried about bumping them:

If I find either the peanut butter gone, or a mouse in the trap, I know I need start doing a better job at eviction. no mouse traps in the coach, means you never know if you have a mouse problem until it is too late.

I have never caught a mouse in the trap or seen any evidence a mouse was my coach since I have these plugged in:

I have caught a mouse in the coach last year, when I accidentally had those unplugged for about 3 weeks? maybe coincidence.

Squirrels are another story, I do not have an answer to that. They have not been in the coach, but they have made a nest in the generator compartment.

Use your coach is all I can say, then they will generally leave it alone.

Depending on the critters, light seems to work the best for me. Here in the desert we have pack rats that will infest an engine compartment, generator compartment, or anything else they can get into, overnight. I have a couple of light ropes under or around my coach, plus a "Rid-A-Rat" LED strobe in my engine compartment. Problem solved. I don't know if these measures will work against mice or squirrels, but I think they might. They certainly work against the nocturnal rats.

I've seen mice and squirrels peeking around the corner at me in a
brightly lighted area, so the rope light probably won't keep them out.
However, they will work on the bushy-tailed woodrat AKA packrat. We
trapped and relocated 3 of the buggers in 4 days, then installed a few 40
w equivalent LED bulbs in the attic. Kept the trap waiting in vain for 2
weeks, then removed it and are relying on the lights to keep the floor
woodrat poo clear. Still looks good after a month.
Cute (not so) little rascals.
