Last year I got supprized by loss of traction on steep inclines with wet cobblestone. I did som thinking about the reasons for that except the fact that it is a general frontwheeldrive problem
What has been done to Olga to make it worse:

Mount a motorbike carrier on the rear with all kinds of luggage maybe 200 pounds

Reduce frontwheel weight by:
Mounting alcoas
Headers iso manifolds
Alu radiotor

Drive with worn shocks

I believe a limited slip diff is available and it helps.

Cobbles in Scotland were often like ice when wet so its likely RWD might not have fared much better.....

This, plus the 3.70 limited slip final drive, helps in dirt anyway:

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/g5521-dodge-front-wheels-5-2f10.html

One of the problems is the hard tires. If you were to temporarily let some air out of your tires, say down to as low as 25 - 30 psi, you would have much better traction. Of course, you would need to air them back up as soon as you were on a better surface.

Remember, you are pulling 8,000 lbs around with 4,000 lbs on the front wheels. Traction problems are inherent in the design.

I found significant improvement in front traction by running a AT tire.

http://us.coopertire.com/Tires/Light-Truck/DISCOVERER-A-T3.aspx

I also run a wider front tire on a wider rim, but I still had the traction problem when I had the same wider highway tread tire.

It is not perfect, but I think i have doubled the traction up front with the AT tire.

Jon, Are you running the 245/70R16-LR-E? That looks like the perfect tire to run on the 8" wide rims.

Yes I could add to things done to make it worse: mounting comfortable summer tires

Having to not only pupp but to overcome the turning of the rear tandem
scrubbing is like putting on brakes.
I know our limited slip has solved these problems.

Appie,

The changes you made would drop the weight directly on the front end by 200 lbs MAYBE and in my opinion would not make an
appreciable difference regarding traction. Your summer tires (AKA highway - HT) would make a larger difference. I would suggest when
you need tires to fit All Terrain (AT) tires.

You could also fit one of these: http://www.appliedgmc.com/prod.itml/icOid/876

The problem you're going to run into fitting one of these is that you're probably going to have to have JimK ship you a complete
final drive (I would not trust a shop in Europe to have the correct tools to fit it) and the shipping is going to be OUTRAGEOUS
unless Jim can find a way to have it shipped vie sea freight. If you decide to purchase the LSD I would suggest that you have a 3.55
to 1 gear set installed.

Rob M.

Now I was only sharing some thoughts about how made aproblem worse without realising
I dont find the problom so serious that I will install a new final drive
The new shocks do help and soon I will need new tires, they wear like hell. That will surely help to
Then I stay away from sand and mud and will be allright.

See it as a holliday for Olga too. She has been used every single day since july 1th last year. Think she can use a break too 😊 But she is not going to be the firsth gmc in Afrika. That would have been nice

Carl,

Yes, that is the size tire I am running. I do like the cooper, and I am happy I went with that over the BFG. It is also a true E rated tire.

I hope your putting a limited slip final drive in , not just another one as
it cannot help your problem.
